A Good Book That Begins Beyond the Basics

Since I'm offering an opinion (and review) on the book, The Digital Photography Book, I think a brief look at my background may give what follows a bit more veracity. I am an enthusiastic advanced amateur photographer with roughly 40 years of experience that includes a goodly number of awards and published photos. I shut down my wet darkroom a few years ago and have happily traded film and silver-based images for electrons, pixels and ink jet printing.

Enough about me; now let's look at the latest book by Scott Kelby (of National Association of Photoshop Professionals fame): The Digital Photography Book.

This is a different kind of animal in the world of self-help photography books. The author describes the experience of reading the book as having your good friend--who also happens to be an expert in digital photography--standing besides you while you're taking pictures.

The book lives up to Scott's description--complete with the frequent interjection of his quirky sense of humor. (Warning, watch out for the first page of Chapter One.)

I don't feel this is a book for complete novices--either in photography or in the use of digital equipment. Scott assumes the readers already know the basics of how their cameras work (what and where the controls are) and have used their cameras long enough to know what else they want to learn to take better photographs.

Another reason some basic knowledge of photography is necessary to get the most from this book is that Scott doesn't shy away from including the terms in common use by digital photographers today: ISO, white balance, focal length, lens aperture, etc. He also assumes the readers have the desire to move up in the ranks from point-and-shooters to at least competent amateurs. Therefore, Scott includes numerous suggestions about photographic gear he feels can help any photographer take better pictures--and, although he breaks his suggestions down by price range, much of the gear still comes with a hefty price tag.

A look at the chapter titles also confirms that Scott was not writing a teach-everything book for all readers. The 11 chapters include specialized topics, such as, Shooting Flowers like a Pro, Shooting Weddings Like a Pro, Shooting Sports Like a Pro and Taking Advantage of Digital Like a Pro. For me, the final chapter, Photo Recipes to Help You Get "The Shot", was the best part of the book. This is where Scott puts everything together and takes his readers into the field to practice what they've learned.

So, do I like The Digital Photography Book? More importantly, do I recommend it? Yes, to both of these questions; but, as I mentioned above, to get the most out of the book, the reader should have at least point-and-shoot digital experience and a basic vocabulary of photographic terms.

One final note. The book can be read front to back, or chapters can be sampled at random to learn just the techniques each reader needs. At the offered price, I think The Digital Photography Book definitely has a place in a well-rounded photographer's library.

How you can get professional results with your equipment.

I have enjoyed photography as a hobby for 50+years. I own a Canon 20D and am a Scott Kelby fan. He is a great photoshop expert, yet emphasizes the importance of getting the best possible shot when taking the picture, to make your time in photoshop more enjoyable. You don't have to work as hard if you make the correct exposure to begin with.

Scott approaches each chapter with some humor, and really understands what you really need is a clear bottom line on how to approach the person or subject you want to photograph.

I received my book Sept 4th, read it and used some of his tips shooting 500+ volleyball pictures Sept 5th. I think I can see some improvement in my pictures already.

He has equipment recommendations and shooting tips for the person that has just bought a digital camera to the person that uses it to make a living.

He has worked alongside of professionals learning tips on how to process the digital photographs and how to best print them. Scott believes photography can be more fun if you get results you like by using some of the basic principles used by professional photographers.

I have unhesitatingly recommended this book to several of my friends.

This is one of the least expensive camera related purchases that I have made to bring my excitement of photography to a new level.

I am quite certain you won't be disappointed, especially if you own a Nikon or Canon digital SLR.

I expect my copy to become dog eared from use.

If you Own a Digital Camera You Will Benefit from This Book

This is the most practical and useful book on digital photography that you will find on the shelves. The book is Filled with tips and tricks of the trade that the professional photographers use every day to get wonderful looking pictures using nothing but a digital camera similar to the one you have. Why their photographs look better than yours? Well is not always the camera, most of the credit is to know how to take advantage of the camera you have: selecting the right settings for different situations, choosing the right location, etc.

Full of examples and straight to the point tips, this book will definitively improve the quality of every single shot you take. When I compare the pictures I took before I read the book with my latest pictures, it looks like I am know using a far better or more expensive digital camera, but the only difference is the know-how I gained from the book.

The Trials of Escaped Slaves and Finally Freedom!

This is a riveting read with descriptive details about people who broke away from their chains of slavery and made their way, often with help from people who were part of the elusive "underground railroad", to a life of freedom in Canada. It is both heart rending that any human being could be subjected to the horrors of slavery - sometimes with horrible brutality used to "keep them in line", and uplifting that so many managed to escape. It is incredible that anyone who is part of the human race could and would treat other humans in such despicable ways - and justify themselves in doing so. It is also heart warming that a segment of the northern states population were sympathetic to their cause, and enabled them to be free human beings for the rest of their lives.

A wonderful compilation of personal accounts of runaway slaves that passed through the shelter of William Still, son of slaves and an important cog in assisting those who had escaped slavery. This is an extremely important collection because it was first printed after the Civil War and before Reconstruction-otherwise it may have been lost-this is a reprinting. Bad masters/mistresses, okay masters/mistresses, these people just wanted to be free, but aside from the dangers, they had to possibly leave behind elders who needed them, dependent children, ailing spouses, etc. You will learn a lot from this read!

This little gem is exactly as its title says: FIRST HAND narratives. This book is a perfect read for anyone researching that time period whether sixth-grader or thesis writer. Naturally, the spelling and grammar are left as was originally written,spoken by men,women who despite a ban on education, often found the wherewithal to self-teach. Reads like you are THERE!

About the Author
Saul Williams is an acclaimed poet, musician, and actor. The film Slam, which he cowrote and starred in, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival (1998), and the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He has contributed to The New York Times, voiced Jean-Michel Basquiat in�Downtown 81, and cut records with Rick Rubin and Trent Reznor. He has spoken at more than 200 universities where his poetry has been added to the curriculum of dozens of creative writing programs, and has taught poetry/performance workshops around the world. it feels like you are really looking into someone's stream of consciousness

I'm not usually one for poetry, especially written poetry. I'm of the mind that poetry is meant to be heard. But Williams might have changed my mind about this; at least to some extent. Part poetry, part script, part visual art, this book has a little bit of everything. It uses the page to express themes in the poems. One poem about division is literally split down the middle. When the words are scattered across the page, it feels like you are really looking into someone's stream of consciousness. Williams makes the poems interactive in a way I don't usually see and it was so refreshing.

As a person who comes from the visual arts, I found his play on visuals with the way he "drew" his poems, challenged the typical layout of stanzas and how things are written to convey a visual confusion, appropriately reflecting the overwhelming visual chaos of our times. Saul Williams is a brilliant artist and poet because he culls his references from all that is around us. I have been on the hunt for a longtime for a master poet, one who can mirror our times and Saul Williams is truly it. His rhyme and melody are jazz/rap/and religious hymns all at once. His choice of words and reason are profound. They are all reflective of his soulful journey, open mind and (in)sight.This book of poetry is one of the best I have read so far. I cannot recommend a book more.

The stakes are high and the pressure is on to do well. Examiners know that. Now as a test taker know that too. This guide clears up a lot of misconceptions about standardized tests and what is needed to pass them. It also gives the testing information plain and simple.

Great guide for experienced nomads AND vacationers

My husband and I are digital nomads and have spent a lot of time working from our computers and travelling through Europe, Asia, and North & Central America. I wasn't sure how much I would get out of the book that I hadn't discovered through trial and error on our own journey but BOY WAS I WRONG. And I'm not one to admit that often, lol. Reading through I was surprised at how many of the cool tools I was unaware of... and here I thought I was a professional at this whole traveling business!

After having read the book I keep finding myself going back to it to reference the well thought out guides and links to tools I've already started using to plan our next trip. We tend to travel for quite extended periods but I think most of the book is actually applicable to short vacation type travel as well and I've already gifted a copy to two friends who are vacation travelers.

Indispensable practical guide for those ready to make the nomadic leap

So, my only complaint is that this book didn’t come out about three months earlier! Mish has put together an easy-to-read and highly informative compendium of tips and resources for just about all of the questions I was struggling to answer while I was getting ready to take off on my own digital nomad experience at the beginning of the year. I am a pretty seasoned traveler, but setting off on an indefinite journey requires a different type of thinking (although much of the information contained in the book would be helpful for travel of any length). Packing both light and right, booking flights, finding the perfect accommodation, making insurance decisions, getting visas, coping at the airport – all of the big logistical and planning issues are covered. I have had several “aha” moments while reading and am excited to implement some of Mish’s strategies as I start to plan my next move.

If you are looking for a soul-searching, is-extended-travel-for-me? book, you are best to look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a practical guide to help save you time, aggravation, money, and a few grey hairs, don’t pass it up!

Indispensable for the new or nervous traveler! This book is exactly what it claims to be, a down to earth practical guide for would-be long term travelers. The tips and advice are things you could learn the hard way, after years of travel, but save yourself the crappy luggage, expensive tickets, frustration and wasted effort by picking up some tricks from this book.

Now I didn't give it 5 stars because I felt it didn't offer much to me as someone who's already achieved the perpetual traveler gig. There are some great nuggets of advice in there about visas and health insurance, but only really applies to US and UK citizens. To be fair Mish makes nods to other EU citizens, so she's aware that not everyone comes from the USA, UK, or even the rich West in particular.

Almost all this information you could find online for free, but you'd have to sort and sift through thousands of pages of noise, parse out the dregs from the gold and make a correct judgement. But in this book Mish has collected an astounding amount of relevant practical advice, complete with links to resources. That brings up another point, I'm not sure how ever green this book will be. The internet landscape changes fast, as do product lines. If you're considering this book years from print date, and it hasn't been updated, well I'd read some more recent reviews to make sure it is still relevant.

If you're a new traveler or aspiring, you can't go wrong in purchasing this book at any price point.

If you're already a long-time traveler, familiar with the digital landscape, the e-book might be worth it to you as there's a few nuggets in here, though not enough to warrant purchase of the dead tree edition.

This Was Lock The Doors & Windows Creepy!

This book of "true sightings" by apparently normal, sober people scared me to death! One of those "glad hubby is home tonight" books. Some of it drags a bit (why it got 4 stars instead of 5) but the stories for the most part are truly creepy. The one that got to me (spoiler alert!) was where a woman was driving down a dark road and comes upon a person walking on the side of the road. Happens to everyone all the time right? Well as she passed the walker turned and looked at her and gave her a big werewolf snarl from a snout full of teeth. Seems the walker was your typical "Manwolf". Yikes.
If you like werewolves this book is worth a read.

This book is AWESOME!!!!

This book is absolutely PERFECT for any Paranormal fan. I've been fascinated with Mrs. Godfrey's work since I found her website awhile back. These Man-Wolf creatures are very interesting, and it almost has me packing up to go and do some research. Although I'm not sure I actually will, I don't want to get attacked or anything. *LOL* In all seriousness though, this book is amazing and very well written. I loved it very much and could not put it down. Matter of fact I'm reading it again. Being a Paranormal researcher myself it's a "field-guide" I'll never part ways with. :)

A Howling Good Read

Linda Godfrey combines the get-your-paws-dirty ethics of investigative journalism with the wit and perspective of a woman who's been to the weird side...and back again. And she's a crackerjack writer to boot. Linda gives Cryptozoology a good name and I can't wait to sink my teeth into her next title. A great read late at night with the covers pulled tight (and windows locked shut). Beware the roadside shadows...they may have claws.

This book is hands down the best book I've seen for LSAT prep! I have used Princeton, Kaplan, and Barrons. Your book is perfectly put together and so easy to understand. I have honestly learned more in 3 weeks with this book, than I did with 3 months of the other books combined. --Jeff Thomas

Absolutely essential for every test taker

The short story is that this book is absolutely incredible, worth every penny, and increased my LR performance from getting 15 wrong every time to getting only four wrong every time. BUY IT, especially before you do any other kind of prep. Give yourself a month to get through it. It gives you concrete methods for how to attack every problem type.

The long story:

I had a roundabout way of getting to the point where I ordered this book. I took a Kaplan course and hated it. I did all of the homework and dedicated my life to the course for a month straight. It wasn't working. My score went from a 160 on the diagnostic to a 152, then a 154. The 160 diagnostic enabled me to enroll in their advanced course, but the course was completely unhelpful. Kaplan's methods aren't methods; they just say things like "oh, that is out of the scope, so it's wrong". Well, how do I know it's out of the scope? You don't. Or, you could probably figure it out, but that takes tons of time and on the LSAT you don't have tons of time. Kaplan does not give concrete reasons that can be applied to every question of the same type for determining why something is or isn't correct. The course wasn't working for me or improving my score, so after three weeks (the course was five weeks total), I dropped it. What a waste of over $1000.

I decided to get private tutoring. The tutoring company I used was brilliant for games, but also very expensive and I had already dropped a ton of money on the Kaplan course. I decided I'd look into using a book for LR instead. And I am saying this now to everyone who has not yet started prepping for the LSAT: BUY THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU TAKE A CLASS OR GET TUTORING OF ANY KIND. GIVE YOURSELF A MONTH WITH THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU DO ANY KIND OF LR PREP WHATSOEVER. This will save you a ton of money - the book is a HUGE bargain and worth every penny. It will also give you an excellent foundation for learning how to do every single kind of problem, and it is likely that you will not have to do any other kind of prep (ie tutoring or a class) once you read this book. You will obviously have to do a lot of practice problems and tests, but you won't need any other kind of instruction as to how to do the problems.

The main reason I like this book is it gives you an actual method as to how to do each problem type. My problem wasn't that I didn't understand why the right answer was right, it was that I couldn't finish in time, so I a) had to guess on the last five problems and b) sped up and my accuracy went out the window. By using the methods in this book, I was able to cut down on time for these problems so that I now always finish with at least three minutes to spare. The methods tell you how to look at a problem, what to look for, what is a likely incorrect answer (so that when you see it you can eliminate it very quickly without being tempted), and what a correct answer looks like. The most helpful piece of advice they give is that there is an identifiable and clear correct answer out of each of the choices. By using these methods, I was able to figure out what that answer was quickly, or at least figure out what the wrong answers were quickly.

The other thing to be said about this is that it is a long book. It's over 500 pages. GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME TO GET THROUGH IT. Skimming it, or just reading the methods, will not help you. You have to practice them until they become second nature. And you also have to give yourself enough time to actually get through all of the pages. I worked full time while getting through this, and I spent my lunch hour every day working through it, and was able to get through it in just over a month.

You can't expect this to work miracles overnight. But if you put in the time, it will help you increase your speed and accuracy without ever having to pay for a course or tutoring. Or, it will at least give you a sense of what kinds of problems you have trouble with, and then you can get the most out of tutoring by being efficient about it and targeting your weak areas. Or even if you don't get tutoring, you will know what kinds to practice.

I wasted $1000 before I picked this wonderful book up. Don't repeat my mistake. Use this as a first line of defense, and see just how far it will get you in your quest for a great LSAT score.

Note: I have not gotten my official LSAT score back yet. However, I did finish both LR sections with time to spare, and in practice exams, I had consistently gotten no more than four wrong on the LR sections in the past five tests i'd taken.

Use 7Sage Instead

While this book is helpful, I found an online curriculum called 7Sage to be much more helpful. This book seems to miss some fundamental conceptual ideas behind the questions, while focusing too much on "easy" fixes to get you to the right answer. While that might work for the majority of the questions, if you're looking to be a mid-170s scorer, you need that conceptual background to get the curve-breaker questions correct. I got that background in a much easier manner and more quickly through 7Sage, and so I'd honestly recommend that program over buying this book. 7Sage focuses on things like the concepts that link principle and sufficient assumption questions, rather than teaching those in isolation the way this book does.

Great LSAT Prep Book

I used all three Powerscore books when studying for the LSAT and this was the best; I also recommend the Logic Games Bible (the Reading Comprehension Bible wasn't as helpful, mainly because I think it's a really hard section to study for). It completely changed (in a good way) the way I did the logical reasoning questions - my scores on practice tests greatly improved. It breaks down each type of question and teaches you how to do them quickly. It takes some time to go through the book but it's totally worth it!
