Funny, colorful, retelling of everyone's favorite song

This terrific re-telling of the "eensy-weensy (or itsy-bitsy) spider" tale is smart, funny, and visually appealing. It's just long enough to be a perfect read-with-me book, and kids will enjoy the colorful, detailed illustrations and cheerful characters. Perhaps best of all, adults will find the visual jokes quite funny, even after re-reading the book many times. It's already a favorite in my household. Highly recommended for any family that sings "The Eensy-Weensy/Itsy Bitsy Spider" on a daily basis.

A Lesson for the Day Picture Book, Was Hoping for a Humorous Sequel

Eensy Weensy Spider is back and this time she's freaking out! Would have liked a bit more information or a scene with whatever the events were that has brought her mind to this stage, since all that seemed to happen was a bit of water flushing her down onto the ground. Seems that would be a common occurrence for spiders living in manmade stuff like drains. But anyway she's freaking out and tells a journalist from Spider Insider so. Of course he runs the story, and Eensy, so ashamed becomes a recluse. It's up to her friend a ladybug who is not only not afraid of being eaten, but isn't afraid to call the spider a big chicken and ridicule its ridiculous phobia. Motivating Eensy by getting her to start small, with a pot plant. That's pretty much all the entire story is, just bigger thing, after bigger thing for the spider to climb. I can see this being some sort of lesson for a child who maybe fell off a bike or something and is afraid to get back on, but there's not really any entertainment value with this one. It actually reminded me more of The Little Engine that could. Most fractured fairy tales or sequels try to add a bit of humour, surprisingly and I have to say disappointingly as well, this one didn't and has just gone for a motivational get over it and get back on the horse lesson.

The eensy weensy spider had all eight legs moving and was climbing up the waterspout. That was exactly what eensy weensy spiders are supposed to do, but when the rain came down and washed her out with a tippy tumble it was just totally embarrassing. Things just didn't happen to her like that and she "freaked out, big-time!" To save face she just yelled at another spider and claimed, "There's no way I'm climbing back up that gutter! If I had a neck, I could have broken it!" Well, news flies fast and before you know it, eensy weensy's failure was spread all over the Web. She read about in on the "Spider Insider" and if it was there you can bet it was on Facebook and Twitter.

She was so upset she stayed in her "garden apartment" and only peeked out around her yellow polka dot curtains. Her friend Polly, a ladybug, finally ambled up her stone walkway to pay her a visit. Eensy Weensy looked totally depressed when Polly tried to talk to her about the incident and claimed she'd "never felt so low." There was no way she was going to try again, but a little teasing goes a long way. "BAWK BAWK! C'mon you big chicken . . . " Blah, blah, blah and Eensy Weensy was out there eying a plant pot. First it was one leg and then the other seven followed. You go girl! She made it to the top of the plant pot, then the fireplug, and even a mailbox. Was Eensy Weensy going to redeem herself for all her fans or was she going prove herself to be a big failure?

This zany fractured fairy tale starring the "new" Eensy Weensy Spider will give your little one a case of the giggles. Eensy Weensy and her unexpected fall from grace on the Web has been very popular with the eensy weensy ones in my neck of the woods. She learns that you simply cannot hide under a rock (or in a garden apartment) and expect to succeed at anything. This book shows that she was daring and willing to try climbing again even though she tumbled down that spout. The surprising little twist at the end will have everyone smiling. The "new" Eensy Weensy was a lot of fun and if you like your fairy tales sprinkled with a bit of humor, this is one fractured fairy tale you might want to consider!

About the Author
Michael L. Kluemper served as a board member for the National Council of Japanese Language Teachers from 2001�08, and has worked on national task forces for the implementation of a Japanese AP course. He lives in Louisville, KY.

Lisa Berkson was honored by the Association of Indiana Teachers of Japanese as the language teacher of the year in 2007. She currently teaches Japanese and Chinese language classes at Dobson High School in Mesa, AZ.

Nathan Patton teaches Japanese language at Scott County High School in Georgetown, KY where he serves as Chair of the World Language Department.

My Favorite Chess Book!

This is one of my all time favorite chess books. It is a tactical primer, and even though countless dozens of such books have been written since, this still remains as one of the very best. It covers all of the basic tactical motifs, such as pins, skewers, N forks, weak back ranks, and overworked pieces. The examples are well chosen, and all seem to come from practical play, with no esoteric studies. The level of difficulty is really ideal, with many basic and easy problems, with a nice selection of more difficult ones thrown in. But what really sets this book apart is its literary merit. It is written with wit, charm and includes a large number of literary quotes that you just rarely find in chess books any more. (IM Cyrus Lakdawala is one current author who does write with literary flair today.) Quizzes reinforce your knowledge, and as noted, the quizzes are designed to boost your confidence by being fairly easily solved. There are a few solutions that don't stand up to computer checking, but this in no way subtracts from the value of the book. If you are 'gung ho' about your chess, and only care about ratings points, there are other tactical books that will serve you as well or better. But if you want to be entertained and even educated as you learn, and want to bask in the charm and humanness of this classic, you will never find a better tactical primer. Ever. (This book can be found in newer editions, with the subtitle 'How to See Three Moves Ahead') Highly and warmly recommended.

A definite buy

I purchased this book just because it was a chess book...and I always can use some tactical reminders (even though I have dozens of others). But this one is truly what the other reviewers have said ! I'm a USCF 1950, my chess play tends toward the positional..... but I know there's no replacement for tactical vision. This book has re-introduced me to realizing potential combinations (implies sacrificing) through envisioning lining up pieces and/or unprotecting them. Yes, most examples were easily solved, but then in my actual games I found myself seeing blocked lines as open..and come crashing through. I'm amazed such a simple book reminds me how any position can go wild!

A Neglected Classic

This book was first issued in 1949, but it is still well worth having. First of all, Chernev -- as usual -- did a lot of hard work for the book. It gives the reader over 300 different tactical puzzles (as well as a few illustrative games). I am not suggesting a book should be judged by the number of pages or positions it contains, but in this age of instant 100-page, 50-position cut-and-paste books, this shows that even if the book were poor (and it is not), it would not be meretricious.

Each is divided into two ("before" and "after" the crucial move) and each explains the tactic involved in detail. The positions -- it is implied (and seems logical) that all are from actual games or variations that could have occurred in them, and a few are explicitly credited -- are divided by tactical theme, in increasing order of difficulty: from pins and double checks to removing the guard, exploiting the weakness of the back rank, "breaking communications" between a piece and an important square, and -- finally -- "combined operations" of these themes, that is, combinations.

The idea behind the book is to make the average player able to (better) understand masters' combinations and, hopefully, to find them themselves. Combinations look like magic to the uninitiated. How do the masters do it? Chernev and Reinfeld, quite correctly in my opinion, define a "combination" as a combined used (one after the other) of different TACTICAL THEMES -- for example, first sacrificing a piece so as to get an opponent's piece pinned, then using the pin to remove it from defending the back rank, then using the back rank's weakness for mate or decisive gain of material.

The vast majority of masters' combinations are, indeed, of this sort. Tactical themes, note the authors, employ forcing moves -- in particular sacrifices, checks, captures, etc. -- moves that LIMIT THE OPPONENTS REPLY, and thus make it possible for the master to calculate many moves ahead. This is the secret of the masters' "magical" ability to sacrifice, say, a rook on move 35 so as to win the queen or mate on move 41. It is not because masters like to sacrifice for the gallery, but because often a sacrifice is the forcing move that makes possible the tactical theme which initiates the combination.

The authors, to their credit, do not claim (or imply) that this is easy! But they show that it is humanely possible,by showing us (from actual games) first how the tactical themes are used, and then how they are combined. When combinations are considered this way and we see "how it is done", this (unlike in the case of magic trick) increases our enjoyment of them, not ruin it.

Very Entertaining

As noted by other reviewers, the author is a very good story-teller and has included many entertaining and--to some extent--informative vignettes in this book.

I have lived in Moscow for many years and have been to many of the places mentioned in the book--unlike some other works I've read about Moscow, this author's descriptions and insights about places and events generally ring true. Moreover, he describes many interesting incidents/personalities that I was not previously aware of, so reading this book was certainly worthwhile for me. As a journalist, the author seems to have had a very good perch from which to observe a rapidly and constantly evolving Moscow.

Some other reviewers have criticized the book for not enabling them to "understand" Russia any better. Don't expect to read this--or any other--book and come away with an "understanding" of Russia, but at least it might help readers appreciate why Russia is such a difficult place to understand.

I enjoyed the book, so why not five stars? I had three basic concerns about the book:

1) Russia, and Moscow in particular, evolves rapidly and is changing constantly. Therefore, many of the author's observations seem a bit dated at this point. The author generally doesn't provide much of a timeline in the book, so it is often hard to determine whether he is writing about 2002 or 2012. Moscow in 2014 is a very different place from Moscow 2002 or Moscow 2012;

2) While many of the author's stories are very entertaining, the result is sort of a grotesque caricature of Moscow, which in fact is a huge and heterogeneous city, with millions of absolutely ordinary people very different from those described in this book. The author provides a good description of an interesting but freakish "froth" of people that provide good copy, but creates an impression that they, rather than ordinary citizens, define the city (which, admittedly, they do to some extent...). Therefore, as you read this book, bear in mind that millions of people are taking the subway/bus to work every day as book keepers, lawyers, account managers, etc., pretty much like everywhere else in the world...

3) In a few instances, the author seems to overdramatize things a bit. For example, he goes on and on about the constant fear of having your "documents checked", etc. In fact, I don't think I've had my "documents checked" even once in the last several years, and it is certainly not something I'm worried about (this kind of thing was indeed more common several years ago, hence my comment about some observations being somewhat dated...).

The Real 'Russia Today'

Too often people go to Russia who see everything and understand nothing. Peter Pomeranzev is a brilliant story teller and "Nothing is True and Everything is Possible" tells us much about life in Russia through the stories of its nobles and citizen serfs. If you want to begin to understand the culture that drives, shapes, rewards, and ultimately drains life and much of its meaning in contemporary Russia (especially Moscow), you must read this book. It is a comically surreal and tragically real story about a people trapped in an elitist system devoid of values (as we know them) and awash in a glittering swamp of liquid gold that corrupts, bullies, denies, and numbs. One wonders what calamity lies ahead as energy prices fall. This book is a must read for every investor, diplomat, visitor, student, teacher, journalist, or policy maker who has an interest in understanding or influencing anything or anyone in contemporary Russia.

This is by far the best book about modern Russia today that I have read. For anybody interested in understanding Russia, this book is a must read, a frightening peek in the madness of the Russian state which threatens Europe with its rebuilt war machine and nuclear weapons.

Peter Pomerantsev’s book about the new Russia reports the collective insanity of the new Russia. As a former resident of Russia and a long-time resident of Ukraine, I can say that this book depicts the transformation in consciousness that has taken place over the past 25 years in the Russian part of the former Soviet Union.

The description of flying into Moscow contrasts sharply with my first memory of coming in to land at Sheremetyevo airport in 1992, a descent over a vast landscape of forest. At that time, Moscow was a small sleepy city surrounded by a natural green world. Russia had no traffic jams, no billboards, no bright lights. My first morning, I walked around the city and came to Red Square while no one was awake on the street.

Today Russia is a collective madhouse in wild pursuit of questionable values and foolish desires, all captured perfectly in this book. His portrait of beautiful girls chasing a Forbes (a super-rich man), the mini biography of Vladislav Surkov, the architect of the Orwellian propaganda state, and his inside views of the Ostankino TV world reveal a Russia that has lost all sense of human values.

It’s a frightening view of a state of almost total derangement.
