A Master Storyteller!

When Kristina answered an ad for a mail order bride for a man in Colorado Springs, she left a life of forced prostitution in Chicago behind. But when Jeremiah recognises her former vocation by her only dress when she arrives, he hands her off to his brother, Luke, who planned to never marry. Luke fights the decision, but soon finds he enjoys being around the little spitfire. Then deadly secrets surface in a way that will forever change them both.

This is one of the few books I have read recently that captured my attention on the first page and didn't let go. Joyce began with laugh out loud humor and moved on through loss, pain, grief, and ultimately joy. Few author's I have read have been able to match her skill in storytelling. I have already purchased book two and am watching for the release of book three. This book is that good.

I love this story

I love this story. The characters are interesting and complicated. The story is touching and emotional. There are some nice twists to keep your interest.
This is not your typical shifter story so you get a unique world and mythology.
While I know this is a series you get a full story and I can't wait for the next.

Interesting story about a Cowboy wolf and his "mail ordered" bride. I loved Luke and Kristina's story. She is just sassy and strong enough to take on two brothers and hold her own in the Wild West. Worth your time for this cute romance. Happy reading.

Love the book

Getting ready for a trip to Italy and wanted to be prepared with basic phrases. I am using several different resources and found that rote memorization is fine to a point, but this book takes you a bit further. THis is not a book of phrases. The author actually explains why the language is constructed the way it is and how the phrases are used in different circumstances. If you are looking for a phrase book, this might be a bit much. If you want to combine a phrase book with a bit of "beyond the basics" this book would work well for you.

needs a proofreader badly

This is a very good intro to Italian. I was pleasantly surprised that it approaches the language in more depth than I expected. However, I am half-way through the book and already found around 50 typos, misspellings, left out translations. The typos are mostly Italian words, so a newbie to the language is stuck. I am in a class using this book so the teacher points those out to us. The authors and publishers need to hire a competent proofreader quickly. They should be embarrassed that this--2nd edition--is so full of errors.

Extremely Well Written

This book is extremely well written. Although it reads like a textbook, this merely reflects the high level of scholarship the author brings to his subject. The analysis is precise, thorough, and clearly explained. He touches a point once, addresses it completely, and then moves on. An essential read.

A good book for specialists

This is a slow and arduous book, even for someone who knows Arabic and has a basic knowledge of the shari'a and fiqh. A better place for the beginning scholar is Bernard Weiss' book, The Spirit of Islamic Law.

The beginning chapters wherein the method of Islamic jurisprudence is outlined are helpful, the middle section which treats primarily the thought of medieval scholar Shatibi will only be of interest to specialists.

Fortunately, the final chapters provide an engagin and interesting survey of different movements that are afoot, desiring to, in some cases radically, reformulate or reconfigure how the shari'a is discerned and applied to Islamic society today.

A Wonderful (and the only) English Work on the Subject

Hallaq's book is excellent in that it manages to capture the essence of each epoch which he covers. Particularly interesting in this book is Hallaq's treatment the birth of usual al-fiqh and its modern interpretations. Reading about the pre-modern zenith of Islamic jurisprudence, which Hallaq completely identifies with the work of al-Shatiby, one becomes totally skeptical to the applicability of Islamic law beyond the realm of religious ritual. However, Hallaq captures well continuity and ingenuity represented in recent reforms achieved by two groups which he will label in the last chapter of his work as the utilitarians and the liberals.
The weakness of Hallaq's work is that its contents are unbalanced. I wish more time was spent on the formation of fiqh and the justification of its existence. Nonetheless, his treatment of these topics is solid. This work can be a little tedious @ times, but usul al-fiqh is itself tedious. In the whole spectrum of the book, one realizes that this itself is part and parcel to the reform occuring today. Excellent work but by no means a decisive study to answer all questions-too short.
