A marvelous book for the "Garage Engineer"

What a pleasant surprise when I opened the book and found detailed plans for the building of a 7 clone. I've often considered building one of these machines for myself,but wondered just how a 5'11",250 lb paul bunyan wannabe would fit inside one of these machines. Well, with the plans at hand, a sheet of paper, a pencil and some quick math, I can determine how I can modify the chassis to fit my rather bulky frame,and maybe even accept a different engine than the pushrod Fords or the Fiat twincams listed in the book. I think a 4-AGE Toyota twincam would be just the ticket...E ticket. Great book, can hardly wait to get started.

This is truly an excellent book

This book has been my first step to a component car creation. It has outlined all the skills required and assists the builder by suggesting further reading. I have not as yet made any further in roads into the production of my Locost but intend to in the near future. I must admit living in the UK helps as parts are available here and there are enterprising individuals building parts to meet Ron's specification.

The book is an excellent starting piont and guide for building your own car. Ron provides the basics leaving out some details to (maybe) insure you know what you are doing but with this book and help from the internet mailing that has resulted you could do it. The book does detail the building of the car in Britain, but with some research it can be done on any contient.

About the Author
Nikolay Golovanov is a graduate of the Mechanical Engineering department of Bauman Moscow State Technical University as a designer of space launch vehicles. Upon his graduation, he began to work with the Kolomna Engineering Design Bureau. While at the bureau, Mr. Golovanov developed software for analyzing the strength and stability of shell structures. In 1989 his colleagues Alexander Golikov and Tatiana Yankina left Kolomna Design Bureau to found software developer called ASCON. Although they began with just an “electronic drafting board,” they were already conceiving the idea of three-dimensional parametric modeling. This radical concept eventually changed flat drawings into three-dimensional models. Nikolay Golovanov joined ASCON in 1994 to began development of C3D – the geometic modeling kernel of the company’s CAD KOMPAS-3D. Today he continues to develop algorithms and to improve the C3D kernel – the only commercial 3D kernel from Russia.

A satisfying introduction to object oriented philosophy...

Graham Harman is a philosopher associated with the new movement of speculative realism in Continental philosophy which includes thinkers like Quentin Meillassoux, Ray Brassier, and Levi Bryant, among others. Graham Harman is unique in pursuing what he calls an object oriented philosophy (actually, I believe Levi Bryant is now pursuing an object oriented approach as well). The entire movement tends to be a reaction against what they take to be the "anti-realism" of most Continental philosophy.

This book serves as a good, short, general introduction to Harman's object oriented approach. Harman makes many arguments throughout this book, but I think his fundamental arguments can be reduced to two general claims. First, the human-world relation is in no way special. As Harman continually reiterates, there is no difference in principle between the human-world relation and the relation between fire and cotton (or any other physical objects). Real objects withdraw from human access, but the same is true of cotton in relation to fire. Fire only reacts to certain qualities of cotton. The fire does not, for example, relate to the cotton's "whiteness" but only to its "flammability". This is what I find to be the most compelling aspect of Harman's philosophy.

Harman's second main argument is that objects constitute an autonomous level of reality. Harman is opposed to both "undermining" and "overmining" objects. Undermining is the attempt by philosophical materialism to reduce objects to a more fundamental level of reality (to reduce human beings to cells, and cells to atoms, etc.). Harman essentially argues for what is now known as emergence. It is a mistake to reduce humans to a lower level, but there are also objects, such as societies, that are larger than humans, and it is equally a mistake to reduce those higher level objects to human beings. Each level achieves a certain degree of autonomy, and the world is ultimately constituted by the relations between autonomous objects at different levels. Overmining, on the other hand, is what happens when empiricists reduce objects to independent sense qualities that are only unified within a human consciousness. This also annihilates the autonomy of the object, and makes the unity of the object depend on a unifying act carried out by consciousness.

Harman works out a fourfold structure that is loosely based on Heidegger's notion of the fourfold between: real objects, real qualities, sensual objects, and sensual qualities. Harman then attempts to explain the tensions and interactions between the members of this fourfold structure. To give only a single example, Harman argues for indirect causation, which means that real objects are never related to other real objects, but only relate indirectly to each other through the other three poles. What I found most interesting and compelling about Harman's fourfold structure was his brief taxonomy of previous philosophies each of which attempts to reduce all of reality to one pole within Harman's fourfold structure. For example, strict empiricists tend to reduce everything to bundles of sense qualities and deny any reality to the other three poles, scientific naturalism tends to consider sense qualities to be nothing but epiphenomena and tends to reduce everything to real qualities (mass, momentum, etc.), phenomenology reduces everything to sense objects or the intentional correlates of consciousness, while Aristotelian essentialism tends to reduce everything to real objects or unified substances.

Against all of these forms of reductionism Harman asserts a necessary tension between all four of these poles. Harman's philosophy is, therefore, a radically anti-reductionist philosophy. Harman writes that "Instead of embracing the reductive positions of the correlationist, the naturalist, the phenomenologist, or the classical realist, object-oriented philosophy gathers the grains of truth found in all four" (143). Harman is essentially providing a taxonomy of previous philosophies and attempting to point out their one sidedness. They each emphasize one aspect of reality while neglecting the others. I find this aspect of his analysis quite compelling. Harman is able to present a comprehensive philosophical standpoint that is able to account for the limited validity of other, less comprehensive, philosophical standpoints.

I do have some minor reservations about certain aspects of Harman's object oriented approach to philosophy, but despite my minor reservations, there is no doubt in my mind that there is a lot that is of great value in Harman's philosophy. Harman also is pretty liberal in his interpretations of previous philosophers. Harman's summary of previous philosophers can often seem overly simplistic or even wrong at times. However, Harman is not attempting to write a scholarly work on Kant, Husserl, or Heidegger, or any other philosopher. Harman is attempting to present his own original philosophy, and in that task he is quite successful. All in all, I would say this book serves as an ideal introduction to Harman's philosophy, and object oriented philosophy, in general.

A metaphysics for environmental studies

Herman is the main founder of the Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) which is an attempt to lift the level of "materials" (objects) in the metaphysical discussions which are traditionally tilted toward human-centrism. In a world in which man-made ecological problems have become ubiquitous, developing a metaphysics which at its core acknowledges the "materiality" of stuff (without giving in to any anthropocentric compromises) is an important part of solution. Herman's OOO is ambitious enough to be exactly this: a meta-physics which can be used as the foundation of a new environmental philosophy.

An inspiration

This is the best book I have read on Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO). The book was published in 2010, and perhaps earlier in blog form, and somewhere along the way I read the material, either browsing at a bookstore, or at the blog.

The material is highly inspiring for concepts of objective metaphysics and logic. However, some readers may be disappointed that the focus is on phenomenology, a topic that some consider abstruse.

You can see the results of my inspiration in a more developed form at: The Dimensional Philosopher's Toolkit, not to be confused with Baggini and Fosl's book, The Philosopher's Toolkit. My focus is more on coherency as a concept, although some of that is present in Harman's book as well. Essentially, both Harman, Meillassoux, and myself have been developing responses to Popper's rather disappointing book Objective Knowledge. It's an interesting area, and particuarly in Harman's case, the reader will be gifted with an eloquent writing style and rather surprising ideas.

This book came before The Dimensional Philosopher's Toolkit, and so far as mainstream philosophy is concerned, it might be better, although it has fewer information-age takeaway ideas. Certainly Harman is considered closer to the inner circle of true philosophers. But I think my book could be worth reading for sheer content concerns.

Don't waste your time or money.

I believe the author's intent was to argue in favor of Biblical inerrancy. What he produced is a poorly written diatribe, reading more like a transcript of a long rant after the author had a few beers. If you are looking for a reasoned, well written theological justification for the author's stated beliefs, look elsewhere. Based on this sample, I also recommend not wasting your time on any of his other writings. I only gave the one star to be able to submit a review, Amazon needs to provide for a negative star rating.

"Forget Positive Thinking...Watch TV Instead"

Chapter 20 of Peter's book suggests just that! Forget affirmations - do this inventive "TV watching" exercise to eliminate (free yourself of) the bad, to make room for the positive talk to be heard! I feel that I am somewhat of an aficianado of self-help books. I keep telling myself I am sworn off of buying them...but then I saw Dr. Vajda give a presentation, and afterward he told us he'd written a book. He also stated ""it will be one of the last self-help books you will ever read." I admit I like to "skip around" and just open the book to whatever chapter speaks to me, and each time I have found something unique - something I had not encountered in other self-help books. He is right, it will probably be the last self-help book I will ever read, because I will refer back to it again and again.

Really Getting To Know Yourself

After reading Peter's book I found so many reasons for the things I believe and the reasons I do many of the things I do. It was so insightful to see myself and others I know in the pages and gain a clarity around those personas.
A great read and must read if you are looking to gain a better understanding of who you are and how to become a better version of yourself.
Insightful, intelligent and compelling.

Still Dreaming of You

Those who know me know that I am not a big book reader. I enjoy reading magazine, informational books...such as those. Never would I have found myself reading an ENTIRE book from start to finish in 4 hours. But, in March 1995 when I was in 5th grade, news rang out at my school that Selena had died. Everyone had asked,"Who?" but not me...for my grandmother had loved her for years. Who would want to harm Selena? From then on, I became tangled in who she was. And I found many similarities. I was Mexican-American also. I hardly spoke or understood Spanish. I was even wearing bangs and lipstick at 11.
For years, I wondered why Chris Perez kept silent but was so grateful that he finally opened up to share his memories with us. It's been 17 years that we lost her. And with the pain we thought we already felt, this book seems to help "stich up" the wounds.
Chris helps you to see who the REAL Selena was. The kind-hearted, funny girl from Texas. She was just like anyone of us.
I recommend this book to all who have heard her songs, saw the movie and anyone who has a dream but is afraid to follow it. For, Selena, this Mexican-American girl from Texas, dreamed big and made it.

Wonderful, personal account of off stage Selena

Selena fans have been waiting for years for a book like this. No one in her family has ever personally penned any sort of biography on her, and this may be the closest we'll ever get. The timeline of the book follows a similar timeline to Selena the movie (minus her childhood and the original Los Dinos years of course), it provides a personal account of Chris' perspective as a band member of Los Dinos, what it was like to be on tour with them, including the early days and the later success, how his relationship with Selena began, the details of their elopement, and the ups and downs they went through as a newly married couple trying to juggle fame, fortunate, family and 5 dogs. He also talks about the awful day she was murdered, his opinion of Yolanda, and his experience after Selena's death, though he doesn't go much into his present day personal life. It fills in many holes that the movie glossed over, not all, but many. Any true Selena fan will appreciate this book. It is so easy to see Selena's smile and hear her laugh the way Chris describes her, he brings her back to life in the pages of the book, making her come alive more as a human being through personal anecdotes about Selena, opposed to focusing on the dazzling performer she was and the superstar she was going to become. It's much less about Selena's success as an artist (though of course that is talked about), and more about how she and Chris felt, what they were going through as the band became more and more successful, and how their relationship grew and evolved. It's like an inside guide to what was happening on a personal level that follows a similar timeline as the movie. Loved it.

Chris did such a great job detailing the love he had for his wife

I was honestly waiting for this book to come out years ago - I literally finished this book in one day. Chris did such a great job detailing the love he had for his wife. It's really refreshing to know that Selena lived her life to the fullest up to her death and that she had an amazing husband supporting her along the way. I am glad they were able to share their success together and have all these great marital stories. Selena will always be my one and only female icon ! As for Chris, one can only hope to find a husband as supporting and loving in their lifetime.
