Welcome to the late 1920s. There are obvious and absolute parallels to the great bull market of the late 1990s, writes Galbraith in a new introduction dated 1997. Of course, Galbraith notes, every financial bubble since 1929 has been compared to the Great Crash, which is why this book has never been out of print since it became a bestseller in 1955.

Galbraith writes with great wit and erudition about the perilous actions of investors, and the curious inaction of the government. He notes that the problem wasn't a scarcity of securities to buy and sell; "the ingenuity and zeal with which companies were devised in which securities might be sold was as remarkable as anything." Those words become strikingly relevant in light of revenue-negative start-up companies coming into the market each week in the 1990s, along with fragmented pieces of established companies, like real estate and bottling plants. Of course, the 1920s were different from the 1990s. There was no safety net below citizens, no unemployment insurance or Social Security. And today we don't have the creepy investment trusts--in which shares of companies that held some stocks and bonds were sold for several times the assets' market value. But, boy, are the similarities spooky, particularly the prevailing trend at the time toward corporate mergers and industry consolidations--not to mention all the partially informed people who imagined themselves to be financial geniuses because the shares of stock they bought kept going up. --Lou Schuler

Great introduction to a very turbulent and complex time in US economic history.

Wonderful read. JKG is a great writer, and keeps the story going through what could be labor-some or dry economic topics. Best audience is someone interested in markets & willing to think along the way. It's not a thriller or such, where you just sit back and read. JKG likely does not get "passive" or inattentive readers. If you want to gain a perspective on what happened in 1929, you'll need to read many, many books to gain a full understanding. This is a great quick intro.

Fantastic book

This book is an extremely clear account of the stock market bubble and disastrous crash of the late 1920s. I have read quite a few financial histories, and they are often quite difficult going. However, Mr. Galbraith's account is a pleasure to read, not least because of his very dry wit. The major drawback to the book is that despite the fact that it has been continuously in print since 1955, we have kept on falling into the same trap over and over, leading to unhappy thoughts about our wise leaders.

Must read

I've just read this book for the third time in the last 30 years. It is eerily relevant to understanding the financial markets, including the post-bubble declines after 2000 and 2007, as it is 1929 and the years immediately after. Also, it is the opposite of dry reading. Enjoyable, understandable, and enlightening. You won't regret reading it.

About the Author
K. W. Taylor is a professor in the Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University, New York. His career began in the US Army, where he was deployed in the US-Vietnam war. He has now been researching Vietnam for nearly forty years, and his work has made a fundamental contribution to the development of the field.

I bought this Keith Taylor's excellent book on the History of the Vietnamese

I bought this Keith Taylor's excellent book on the History of the Vietnamese, because I love his earlier book The Birth of Viet Nam very much.
Professor Keith Taylor approached this history of the Vietnamese with a new and fresh optic very much different from the way Western & French and traditional Vietnamese historians wrote on the same topic.
Taylor emphasized the role the Chinese immigrants and their descendants played during the first 6 centuries AD, after the first war of Independence of Viet Nam leaded by the Trung sisters in 43 AD, a fact that was not elaborated at its just value by previous historians.
He discussed of the matrilocal - and probably matriarchal also - aspect of Viet Society during these earlier centuries, which explains why the first anti Chinese wars were leaded by female leaders like the Trung sisters in the First century and the Lady Trieu in the 3rd century AD.
Taylor shows us that one of the causes of the decline of the Ly dynasty, beside the weak personalities of the Ly kings, was the fact that maternal family played a predominance role in the government for many years.
Ho Quy Ly - Le Quy Ly by his previous name - the man who overthrew the last king of the Tran dynasty in the last years of the XIV century was seen as a ruthless but very efficient state man who tried very hard - but unsuccessfully - to reform the Vietnamese society in the beginning of the XV century. Ho Quy Ly was splendid in his conquests of southern regions of Viet Nam but ran into troubles by the early and over-aggressive hegemonic policy of the Ming emperor.
Probably the political landscape of Vietnamese XV century would be very much different if Ho Quy Ly had a few more years to consolidate his new government before the Chinese Ming invaded Viet Nam. His plan to convert coins money into paper money was a good one but required much more time to implement.
I believe that Taylor's view was influenced partly by the excellent researches of his old friend from the U of Michigan John Whitmore who wrote his doctorate thesis on Ho Quy Ly.
I believe this is a very good history book on Viet Nam.
I feel bad that Taylor does not give us any footnote to help us locate the proper reference on many of his points of view on historical facts. The very long bibliography at the end of the book is overwhelming but a difficult maze to navigate.
It is excellent that Taylor is good in reading and interpreting the chữ Nôm - an old logographic script of the old Vietnamese language - which enabled him to decipher the many scriptures carved in stone steles dating from the first millennium in Viet Nam. This gives us a different view of History when compared side by side with the official Chinese history books.
I will advise anybody interested in the History of Viet Nam to buy this excellent book

Oh sweet knowledge fists of fury understanding!

Oh, sweet heavens, this book is dry, filled with an overwhelming amount of research, and is intimidating in it's size and scope. The writer has no literary style. But I love it so!

If you have any interest in Vietnamese history you have to buy this book and read it, cover to cover. Then do it again. It's that good!

It's about programming, not javascript.

This is book is phenomenal - the best book on programming I've ever read. But it's important to note: it's about programming. The programming just happens to be in in Javascript. If you are looking to learn a few JS commands for your website, this is probably not the right book.

Contrary to the other reviews, Eloquent Javascript is for beginners. This can been seen in Chapter 1... it starts with the number "13". Then goes to arithmetic with "100 + 4 * 11", then boolean "3 > 2". Definitely for beginners.

No, the code examples are not superficial. It's similar to Zed Shaw's exercises in Learn Python the Hard Way - they are specially crafted to teach you something. You should type out the examples on your computer, write comments on what each line does, download the data files from the website, and get the examples to run.

The author put this quote in the introduction:
"I do not enlighten those who are not eager to learn, nor arouse those who are not anxious to give an explanation themselves. If I have presented one corner of the square and they cannot come back to me with the other three, I should not go over the points again." -Confucius

The reason I like Eloquent Javascript so much is that, unlike textbooks, it is written in an easy-going manner, like he's talking to you. Each example builds on previous examples, each chapter builds on the previous chapters. Slowly building up your knowledge. Sometimes without me realizing how much I'm learning.

An example is functional programming. I never understood it or the hype. I read many articles and discussion forums, but I never really got it. In Chapter 5, Higher-Order Functions, the author doesn't even mention the buzz-words "functional programming". He simply starts off with the typical for-loop to print each item in an array. Then he shows how the for-loop can be enclosed in a function. Then he modifies the function so it can take in generic actions instead of just printing - a function that takes another function as input. For practice with functions on functions, you create a few more: filter, map, reduce... BAM! it all hits me. With the stuff I learnt in Chapter 3, I now know the benefits of no-side effects, limiting scope, recursion, and leaving the original data alone. I see why stringing small functions together allows more flexibility than a long recipe of for-loops. I see why functions allow you to follow the data being manipulated more clearly. I finally get it.

The funny thing is, the book isn't even that "deep". After all, it's actually a programming book where he walks you through code examples, not a conceptual computer science book. It's odd how concepts just come to you - that's how eloquent the book actually is.

A book with detailed but challenging examples

After going through this book, I think this book is rather suitable for people with some familiarity with programming than for someone who is new to programming.

As a programming student myself, the book covers important foundations of JavaScript in detail but I have to agree with another review that the examples are difficult to follow. The examples demonstrate how powerful the concept can be, but as a textbook intended to introduce people to programming, the examples can become difficult to comprehend. It's like telling a child to build a Death Star out of legos after teaching them how lego blocks can be attached together (I'm exaggerating but you get the gist). Otherwise, the book offers a strong foundation in every concept you need to learn (No wonder one of the top JavaScript-oriented bootcamps recommends this book). The book's exercise problems are very helpful getting familiar with JavaScript once you master them, and your JavaScript discipline will be great. It will take you a while if this book is the only source , so I recommend combine this book with another source (e.g. JavascriptIsSexy, Mozilla MDN, The Definitive Guide, etc). The author is definitely coming from a programmer's perspective when he's explaining JS concepts. But in order for the book to be an effective textbook, the book should be written from the reader's perspective & that's where the book falls short. It's understandable in a way, because the author is an expert in programming and lives, eats, and sleeps with programming, which may be why the book can't translate concepts to the intended audience who know virtually nothing about programming.

The book's flow is similar to a narrative. Sometimes, it can get weird and confusing (i.e. one of the many reasons the author confuses you). BUT, it attempts to introduce the concepts by illustrating how it can be utilized in real applications (the real-application explanations are really really great. it's one of the best, but it will take you forever to know what's going on).

It was fun read in a way. It was difficult, too... So use another source to understand JavaScript and attempt this book's exercises. They will stimulate your brain and probably increase your IQ (your brain will thank you). projecteuler,coderbyte, codewars are good places for exercises (try coderbyte first, then move onto codewars, then projecteuler).

GREAT book, but VERY challenging for a beginning programmer.

It was really hard to pick the right amount of stars for this book. If you were to ask many Javascript programmers for a list of the essential books to read in order to become proficient at Javascript, then you'll find this one coming up quite often. When it comes to introducing you to all (or at least most) of the essential key concepts of Javascript programming, this is one of the best. As a beginner book, it unfortunately fails. Some here will say that it never specifies that it is trying to be a beginner book, but if you read the first 2 or 3 chapters, it is very clear that it is. It starts off with VERY basic programming concepts and exercises that any beginner can follow.

However, things soon start to ramp up VERY quickly. The book will briefly introduce you to an important concept, and then quickly move on, using that concept throughout the rest of the book, failing to ensure that the concept was sufficiently solidified in the mind of the reader. You simply can't use this book as a stand-alone resource for learning Javascript programming in general.

With all of the above negativity, why would I still give this book 4 stars? Well, as mentioned above, it is still a great book for covering all of the essentials of js programming. If you are an experienced programmer, and are now ready to learn the Javascript language, this is a great book for learning the key concepts. There are some challenging exercises that a veteran will be able to handle quite well. Heck, even if you have learned most of the basic Javascript syntax (language rules), then you might be ready to slog through this book. If you can complete most of the exercises in the book quickly and effectively, then you will (in my opinion) have the necessary skills to be able to communicate effectively with JS professionals.

However, if you are just now learning to program, and starting with Javascript (an awesome language to start with too!), then my two recommendations are 1. A Smarter Way to Learn Javascript, and 2. Head First Javascript. (MAKE SURE YOU GET THE LATEST VERSIONS!) Right now, when it comes to premier books that use the latest in teaching techniques to take you from a beginner to intermediate, these are the books I would recommend to someone just starting out.

Whatever your decision is, if you choose to get this book: DO NOT SKIP OUT ON THE EXERCISES. They are challenging, but really good. Practice them over and over again until you understand what you are doing and why, then review the chapter again to collect anything else that you didn't pick up before. THEN move on to the next chapter. This is important because each chapter builds on what has already been discussed. (this doesn't apply to the chapter on Regular Expressions though. Don't feel guilty if you have to skip that one and come back to it later, lol).

About the Author
Percy Wells Cerutty was a controversial figure in Australian athletic circles in the 1960s. Ahead of his time, he advocated a revolutionary approach to athletic training that included dietary advice as well as a hard training regime. He insisted on a win at all costs mentality but felt that athletes should enhance their natural gifts. His most famous pupil was Australia's greatest middle distance runner Herb Elliott, regarded by many as the greatest middle distance runner of all time.

Fantastic!

Words can't really describe how great it is to have this classic work by Percy Cerutty back in print. Once only available at a huge cost on Ebay, this definitive work on athletics is a must have. More than just a training book, it is a book on living and enjoying life to its fullest. In these increasingly complex and difficult times, Percy Cerutty, coach, philosopher, shows the way to not only live but to thrive. Here's hoping that more of his out of print books will be made available soon.

A great tome on distance running and life that has never dated

I am privileged to possess one of the original prints of this book. In fact, more than that, I was able to glance over Perc’s shoulder at the proofs from the printer at his camp at Portsea nearly sixty years ago. Cerutty’s ideas at that time were highly original and revolutionary. More than anyone that I encountered later in my research life, he epitomised the born scientist who took almost nothing for granted and experimented with all manner of running techniques, training and approaches to arrive at what he termed a “naturalistic” approach to running. He would be horrified at our current obsession with real time recording of a host of our bodies parameters. For Perc, training was as much about running “free”, eating what we now call organic foods in as raw a form as practicable and working with heavy weights.

This book was and still is, as far as I am concerned, a “classic.” It was also, in my opinion his best book, not just for its content but also for its style. He wrote it as he spoke it when he lectured and demonstrated to us at “the circus” – the small circular track within the camp. His later writings increasingly veered to male chauvinism and he never really accepted women as athletes. But this book was the direct product of his greatest years as an experimenter and coach of numerous athletes who were a global force in middle and long distance running as well as other events. Much of what he preached then is as true now as it ever was. It belongs to a more primitive era when athletes weren’t paid, stopwatches were mechanical devices and we used our own judgement to determine whether our workouts were fulfilling our expectations.

If PMA Books ever reprint the outstanding biography of Cerutty by Graem Sims, “Why Die? The extraordinary Percy Cerutty, maker of champions,” then grab it as well.

Nice To Have In A Runner's Library

I enjoyed this. He's a little repetitive and a little sexist but it was interesting to capture the mood of the place and the times. If you are interested in running it's worth having. I had to laugh when he described his young charges swimming nude in the ocean after workouts. Today in the US where I live he would probably be jailed if that happened.
