A valuable resource

The Hebrew-English Interlinear ESV – I am so glad to finally own this edition. As a pastor, I have previously used the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (which is the same source document for English translations of the Bible) but the down-side of it is… I can’t read Hebrew.

I own it because I figured, “One day I will sit down and learn to read Biblical Hebrew.” But the reality is, I can’t even find the time to exercise, go for walks, play longer with my kid or eat healthy so when I am I going to find the time to learn to read Hebrew?

This is why I am so glad the editors at Crossway have released this volume. First off, the ESV translation is my favorite English version of the Bible. So right away, this book immediately becomes a valuable resource in my library.

Inside the book on each page the Hebrew text is laid out word-by-word above an English translation showing the “basic meaning” and study of each word. And as an extra bonus, the ESV text is presented separately in the out-most column.

The volume comes as a hardback and has an extra wide cover (.625” x 9.25”) to allow for the extra text. This book is as large as a standard FULL Bible (over 2,000 pages), but remember this is just the Hebrew portion, so you are only getting the Old Testament.

Again, this is a valuable tool for any pastor, scholar, or teacher. Highly recommended!

You would do well to purchase this as an excellent volume for Hebrew OT study. Well laid out...easy on the eyes with an excellent font. Check Crossways Site for a sample page of this volume! The main thing I love is the Hebrew font is clear and well printed. This is Kittel's Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia.
I did a look-up of variances of the volume as opposed to the underlying KJV. OT Text and came across this listing. According to kjvtoday.com, a pro KJV website, the Hebrew text edited by Jacob Ben Chayyim and the third edition of Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia differ in only eight verses.

1 Kings 20:38: “ashes upon his face” - “bandage over his eyes”
Proverbs 8:16: “all the judges of the earth” - “all who judge rightly”
Isaiah 10:16: “Lord” - “LORD”
Isaiah 27:2: “vineyard of red wine” - “pleasant vineyard”
Isaiah 38:14: “LORD” - “Lord”
Ezekiel 30:18: “Be darkened” - “Be held back”
Zephaniah 3:15: “see evil” - “fear evil”
Malachi 1:12: “table of the LORD” - “table of the Lord”

So if these are valid in variance this is a worthwhile volume for your library ...that coupled with the literal highly accurate ESV , makes for enriching study. I look fraward to using this for years to come. Other than the case laminate cover which I do not prefer, other wise it is fairly compact for a large volume, good paper thick enough for high-lightening, and a Smyth-Sewn binding to boot! A very nice aid for those who know some Hebrew and study the OT.

This is a good study aid for someone who does not know Hebrew and does not intend to learn it. What makes this interlinear edition valuable is that the ESV is one of the best translations which make an effort to combine good English while staying very close to the literal Hebrew, which is harder to do with Hebrew than it is with Greek, I have seen similar interlinear translations with ESV and New Testament Greek, and there is one huge difference between this OT treatment and the NT Greek. For the New Testament, all the elements entering into the declensions of nouns and the conjugations of verbs are spelled out, such as gender, number, tense, and what have you. This treatment has none of that, although if you did have a good working knowledge of Hebrew, this presentation would enable you to more easily find your way around a good Hebrew / English Lexicon.

Es necesario revisar las fuentes utilizadas en la version electr�nica ya que al leer este libro en un lector como el kindle paperwhite hay p�rrafos que casi no se veen.

The book starts off well with explaining things very clearly. But as it goes on the typos begins. At first they are mere humorous distractions ($5000 - $2800 = $1200) but as the end of the book nears the mistakes get so bad as to make it completely not understandable. I was really excited when I began this book, I felt that I was really learning a lot (despite the authors expressed disdain for how most professors teach contracts). But now I am stuck reading a chapter that from paragraph to paragraph changes its stance complete with a venn diagram that is simply wrong.

Most important of all is Miyamoto's concept of rhythm, how all things are in harmony, and that by working with the rhythm of a situation we can turn it to our advantage with little effort. Less of a read, more of a guide. ...

Less of a read, more of a guide. One that should be read over and over. If you practice the teachings in conjunction with the book, you will find that not only your fighting skills will benefit, but overall awareness, well-being, wisdom, etc. will be enhanced. Just because sword fighting is a lost art form does not mean that it should be studied less or does not apply to many other art forms or forms of combat. My only issue with the book is that it should be longer. However, perhaps that is the point. Since every word has immense substance, and though there are little, every inch should all be taken heavily.

Great translation of an excellent book in a small but well constructed hardback. The addition of various calligraphy and Musashi's The Way of Walking Alone are a welcomed treat that adds further depth to an already remarkable book.

This book:
The Go Rin No Sho (a.k.a. The Book of Five Rings) is the definitive book on Samurai Philosophy by the archetype of The Wandering Samurai himself, Miyamoto Musashi. Throughout his remarkable life, Musashi developed a philosophy and a style all his own. As stated early in the text, his philosophy is not Budhism, nor Taoism nor any other existing philosophy. It is rather a hard won and practical philosophy, almost a code of conduct and a way of viewing the world that is not bound by esoteric nor abstract thinking. Instead, his writing is about a gradual awakening and clarity of thought that his many and varied experiences led him to. Despite being written by a rampant, unwashed and bewilderingly intelligent swordsman with an odd smattering of formal education, his ability to elucidate the intricacies of strategy and apply it to all aspects of life are staggering and surprisingly relevant even now. You do not have to be a fan of Japan, Samurai, the Edo period, eastern philosophy or any other genre you may want to file this book under in order to appreciate it. It is relatively short, easy to read, to the point and like the man himself, deadly accurate. Enjoy the genius that is The Book of Five Rings.

The Book of Fiver Rings is a very good book and offers excellent advice for people, even today. It's a thrill for me to be able to communicate with a man who's been dead for centuries. By communicate, I mean that I can understand and benefit from his thoughts and experience just as if I had been at a fireside with him. He was an amazing man.

About the Author

Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh was the Director of the Refugee Studies Centre's International Summer School in Forced Migration between 2010 and 2012. Prior to joining the RSC, Elena was Senior Teaching Fellow in Development Studies and Research Fellow in Diaspora Mobilisation and International Security at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She has also worked as a legal advisor for refugees in Cairo with AMERA-Egypt, as a refugee case-worker with Amnesty International Australia's Refugee Team, and as a legal clerk at the International Criminal Court, conducting research on crimes committed in Darfur (Sudan). She is Departmental Lecturer in Forced Migration at the Refugee Studies Centre, and Junior Research Fellow in Refugee Studies at Lady Margaret Hall, both at the University of Oxford.

Gil Loescher is a long-established expert on international refugee policy. For over 25 years, he was Professor of International Relations at the University of Notre Dame in the United States and was a visiting fellow at Princeton University, LSE, Oxford and the Department of Humanitarian Affairs at the US State Department in Washington, D.C. In recent years he has been Senior Research Fellow, Centre for International Studies, University of Oxford, Senior Fellow for Forced Migration and International Security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London and a senior researcher at the European Council on Refugees and Exiles. He is Visiting Professor at the Refugee Studies Centre, Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford.

Katy Long's research examines the politics of migration in conflict and crisis affected areas, focusing in particular on refugee movements and international "solutions" to forced migration crises. Katy has worked extensively with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, particularly in considering how access to migration channels might contribute to resolving refugees' exile. She is a Lecturer in International Development at the University of Edinburgh, having previously been a Lecturer at the Department of International Development, London School of Economics and Political Sciences, and a post-doctoral researcher at the Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford.

Nando Sigona was previously a Senior Research Officer at the Refugee Studies Centre and Senior Researcher at the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford. His research explores the impact of globalisation, migration and the human rights regime on meanings and practices of citizenship and non-citizenship in countries affected by significant population movements. He is particularly interested in statelessness, diasporas and the state; Romani politics and anti-Gypsyism; 'illegality' and the everyday experiences of undocumented migrant children and young people; and governance and governmentality of forced migration in the EU. He is a Birmingham Fellow at the School of Social Policy, University of Birmingham.
