Theoretically excellent, but not a "how to"

I was trained as a physicist and hence appreciate the nuances of electromagnetics starting from Maxwell's equations. This book presents an ordered view of how to shield or attenuate electromagnetic fields (and electrostatic and magnetic fields in the low frequency limit) to a specified value for a range of frequencies/wavelengths. The examples are given as simple geometric shield shapes (cylinder, sphere, rectangular box, etc.) which can be added together to create a more complex shielding surface. It also speaks to multilayer shields (and the constraints that require the use of more than one concentric shield), and shields with penetrations and the frequency and attenuation limits that these holes imply. The author could also have made reference to the myriad simulation programs available for analyzing the effectiveness of a shield design using finite elements or method of moments (see Brett Borden's book on radar reflective surfaces for a great review of stealth technology shielding.)

This book is a little short on how one actually impliments these shields in practice, but most engineers are clever enough to figure out the application as long as one clearly understands the physics principles which this book establishes. For a more applied or cookbook approach, you may want to look at Morrison's old reference book on "Grounding and Shielding Practices" or the encyclopedic work "Electromagnetic Compatibility Handbook" also by Kenneth Kaiser (this is an excellent buy). The only reason that I gave this book four stars is because it could be doubled in length with direct applications to common problems like: 1)building a screen room with penetrations, 2) building a shield box around a prototype circuit to prevent RF leakage in and out, 3) building a filter/shield to keep Tesla coil emissions from frying every electronic device in the vicinity of the coil, and at least one example of a truly complex design like 4)building a low frequency magnetic shield for an MEG gradiometer (brainwave scanner) or a pulsed-magnetic shield for an implanted heart defibrilator...making a pacemaker immune to a 3T MRI scanner.By working through the details of a complex design, the author could expose a number of pitfalls and synergistic interactions that defeat the design.

I don't recommend the blind cookbook approach at all, because it is easy to be blindsided by some obscure effect that will pop up to wreck your design. When I was in grad school, this happened several times until I took the time to learn the fundamentals. For those that don't have the time to figure out the details, skim this book anyway so you know what questions to ask when you take a physics grad student or professor to lunch to pick their brains (E&M engineers get hungry too)

Altogether this is an excellent book and a contribution to general principles which appear to never have been collected between a single cover.

Disappointed

Strangely written Q&A style book. I little bit of insight in the beginning, but not a very deep book, nor is it very helpful in practice.

Some of the topics in the index sound interesting. They are a disappointment.

Methodical Teaching

Jim Stinnett does a great job on this topic. If you're considering getting serious about your improvisation skills on bass, this book is perfect. I enjoyed every page and this book (along with practice) has elevated my improvisation skills considerably. The book is a little thin, but this is truly all you need (as far as text goes). I bought this along with a Jazz Standards book with CD. The 2 books combined easily replaced any need for face-to-face lessons (I'm a book learner anyway). Wouldn't part with this book as it will be a great reference tool going forward.

Easy and effective way to learn how to play walking bass

This book is a superb and surprisingly quick way to learn how to play walking jazz bass lines. I have played bass-range instruments for 30 years, and technically, I knew how to play walking bass. But for some reason I always sounded less like Ron Carter and more like Chris Squire trying to play jazz. None of the people I played gigs with complained, but they didn't really rave, either. I knew there were things I didn't know, so I tried this book. In a matter of a few days, my walking bass lines got 1,000% better.

I love that this book is not dumbed-down -- he teaches you not just how to get the chord tones right, but how to introduce chromatics, substitutions, etc., that can make you sound a lot more interesting -- and edgy, too, if that's what you're looking for. And he makes it all easy to understand.

That said, this book is not for beginners. You have to know how to read bass clef (although you do not need to be a good sight-reader), and you will have to be able to spell chords at the very least.

Highly recommended. I have already bought two more of his books and am digging them, too.

David DiValerio’s The Holy Madmen of Tibet (New York: OUP, 2015) is a work of outstanding scholarship on a fascinating and controversial subject within the fields of Tibetan Studies, Buddhist Studies, and Religious Studies in general. Utilizing a rich palette of theoretical perspectives, DiValerio argues that the famous religious “madmen” of Tibet are anything but crazy, but rather are adept rhetoricians skilled in the art of self-representation within the religious imaginaire of Tibetan Buddhism. It is a valuable contribution to several fields of study and is bound to be read with great interest by scholars and students from a wide variety of academic disciplines.

DiValerio’s writing style is lucid yet erudite. Throughout the book he is able to express complex and at times opaque concepts with impressive clarity that renders them accessible to the non-specialist, without sacrificing the intricacy and nuance of the specific historical, cultural, philosophical, and religious contexts. DiValerio conveys the dense, textured nature of the material to readers outside the relatively narrow field of Tibetan Buddhist studies by drawing on relevant contemporary theorists in his comparative and cross-cultural analysis. Additionally, he manages to employ his clear, concise writing on this difficult and unfamiliar material to support his sophisticated arguments.

In addition to making the subject matter accessible to general readers, the book is an exemplary and important piece of original scholarship. The topic of “religious madness” in Tibetan Buddhism has gripped the imagination of scholars and casual observers for decades, and continues to enjoy a broad popular appeal in trade publications on Buddhism and Asian religions generally. There is a tendency to associate the unconventional behavior of a handful of such Tibetan “religious madmen” as evidence of their “enlightened” perspective, much the way that literary reports of iconoclastic Zen masters have done for generations. Prof. DiValerio probes beneath such superficial perceptions of Tibet’s “holy madmen” through thorough, painstaking textual research from a wide variety of sources, balanced and complemented by contemporary field interviews. Moreover, he comprehensively summarizes and analyzes the scholarly literature on the subject. DiValerio primarily approaches his subject as a scholar of religious studies. This means that he draws on a number of methodological approaches—including historical, philosophical, theoretical, ethnological, linguistic, etc.—to describe and contextualize the specific historical figures under consideration, as well as their actions. Whereas this approach may not fully satisfy historians, philosophers, etc., such “methodological polytheism” is typical in the field of religious studies, and Prof. DiValerio is an extremely able practitioner of the craft.

The monograph largely succeeds at creating an absorbing narrative that conveys, to the extent possible, the multifaceted social, political, psychological, and religious landscapes in which these “holy madmen” operated. DiValerio admirably maintains the thread of his principal argument throughout the book’s disparate chapters, although at times the reader can become lost in all the details. In the end, however, the book’s greatest accomplishment is not so much its “argument” as its complex and intriguing portrait of the phenomenon of religious madness, particularly as it has manifested (and continues to manifest) in the world of Tibetan Buddhism, in Asia and beyond. That in itself is extremely worthwhile.

There is no doubt that The Holy Madmen of Tibet marks an important contribution to the fields of Tibetan Studies, Buddhist Studies, and Religious Studies. Much has been said about such religious madmen over the years, but this book represents the first sustained scholarly treatment of the phenomenon. For that reason alone, the book is enormously valuable. It also makes a persuasive argument for the need to understand such religious “madness” from a number of critical perspectives, and that in the end the trope of madness in Tibetan religion has been primarily used by very sane individuals to promote their own unique and creative visions of Tibetan Buddhism. Although this may not be sufficiently breathtaking to cause an intellectual “paradigm shift” in the field, it is an important insight that deserves our consideration. Finally, scholars, experts, and “informed general readers” will certainly welcome this study, although it may frustrate or disappoint the readers looking for a “new age” interpretation.

My son and I are 24 fans, so we know the episodes to which the book refers. The book helps us to understand the philosophy behind it, and to ask questions about what we would do in such awful circumstances. It really makes you think. I haven't studied philosophy since college, so it was nice to revisit it.

I sent this as a gift to my Mom who is a die hard Jack fan for Christmas. As more of my family joined us for holiday visits, everyone was drawn to the coffee table where this book as proudly laid out. Everyone was drooling over this book and wanted to flip through it and wanted to know where I got it so they can go out and buy it too.

It's a classic (and a Caldecott Medal winner) for a reason!

This book is part of my standard baby shower gift package along with Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny. With very few words it manages to tell a very simple, yet very elegant story that young children can relate to. The pictures are beautiful and draw children further into the story. As an added bonus, the main character is African-American. Though it makes no difference to the story, it was important to me as a child reading this book 25 years ago to see a kid that looked like me in a book where race was not the focus of the plot, and is important to children of any race reading it today. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for any child of any race, boy or girl.

The joy a child has in a snowy day.

A small book for children, particularly pre-schoolers, about a little boy who goes outside to play in the new fallen snow. It shows the simple joy and delight a child can have with newly fallen snow. I disagree with the comments of an earlier reviewer (Ms. Whittaker from Rush City, Minnesota, in 1998); the artwork is simple and direct because of the nature of the simple and quiet story and because the book is really aimed a pre-schoolers. Interestingly, the book won the 1963 Caldecott Medal for best illustration in a children's book. As far as I can tell, this book is the first winner which is centered about an African-American child. Hence, for this and other reasons, it is a book that should be on the shelf of any serious student of children literature.

Let it snow (y day)

When "The Snowy Day" first came out, it was considered groundbreaking. Unprecedented. Here, at last, was a picture book in which the protagonist is black. It's not an overtly political book, mind you. Just a nice story about a kid in the city playing in the snow. Having heard about this story for a long time, I decided now was the moment to see how well this book has stood up over time. Ezra Jack Keats has long passed from idle picture book author to a somewhat god-like figure of the children's book world, so does this early work stand out even today? If it was introduced for the first time now, would it be considered as good as it is? Yes and no. The book is both a fabulous creation, and a very simple, very normal, tale that everyone on one level or another is familiar with.
In this book, Peter wakes up to discover that snow has covered the city in the night. Delighted, he pulls on his bright red (and now world known) snowsuit and plunges into a day of exploring and playing. He makes fun tracks, and hits snow off the branches of trees. He constructs a smiling snowman and slides down steep mountains of snow. At the end of the day his mother gets him out of his wet clothes and gives him a nice hot bath. The next morning the snow is still there, and an ecstatic Peter calls up a friend to do the whole day over again.
When I was a child I loved (and still do) stories that took place in the big cities. Keats never draws an inordinate amount of attention to Peter's surroundings. So while you won't see skyscrapers or taxi cabs, there's a distinctly urban feel to the lay of the land. The text is nice and easy for the youngsters to understand. As for the cut-outs, they're a delight to look at. Picture books featuring cut-outs may be remembered best as belonging to such artists as Eric Carle or Leo Lionni, but I consider Mr. Keats to be the granddaddy of the art form. Aside from the beauty of the landscaping in this pictures, I loved the papers used in the book. The section in which Peter sits on the snow, a snowball embedded on his chest, the black sky is a-swirl in greens, blues, and browns. When Peter slides down a snow covered embankment, the sky is then a delightful twisty series of white smoke-like curlicues. And Peter's home itself is eloquently rendered. From the wrought iron bed frame to the multicolored wallpaper and tiles that enhance the setting, the book is the best possible combination of elegance and realism.
If it came out today, "Snowy Day" wouldn't garner an overly enthusiastic response from publishers and critics. Which isn't to say that it's unworthy of the praise already received. As I've tried to show, the book is a wonderful amalgamation of text, pattern, and emotion. One of the finest books written for children, and a great evocative story.

About the Author
Mercer Mayer began writing and illustrating children's books in 1966, and since that time, he has published over 300 titles. Open almost any of the award-winning author/illustrator's books, and out may pop dragons, cuddly monsters, wonderful creatures, and endearing critters.

"Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid," says Mercer. "Now that I'm a big kid, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always help remind me of what it was like."

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mercer Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps near his home. During his teenage years, he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He later received additional training at the Art Students League in New York City. Upon completion of his studies, he set out with pen and ink to write and illustrate a collection of children's books, reflecting many of the adventures he experienced as a child.

In 2007, Mr. Mayer was commissioned by Laura Bush to create the artwork used for the National Book Festival held on September 29 on the National Mall. He was an honored guest to the event, giving a demonstration and autographing hundreds of books for fans who attended.

Wonderful little book

My mother "read" this series to me when I was a kid, and I remember always reaching for this one for years afterwards. The illustrations are outstanding -- my mother and I would laugh over a different page every time we read it, because of the boy's expression, the frog's grin, or the way the dog sat. Simple things, but not only was I learning to enjoy books, I learned to use my words to tell stories, notice details, and just have fun with my parents. This isn't a passive "hear a story read to you" experience.
Perhaps needless to say, this book is one of the first gifts I give to nieces and friends at baby showers or birthdays. At showers, everyone has a good laugh over the pictures, and it's always a big hit. My own kids will have the complete set -- probably before they're even born!

Great for Literacy

PERFECT! I have been wanting this entire set for a while, as a speech therapist, they are great books for language & confidence for young readers because they have no words to into mirador them. The story can be in THEIR words.
