Grade 9 Up—Devastated since his father's suicide, milquetoast Luke Prescott lets Briar Academy's golden boy, Hayden Applegate, dictate their friendship. Luke echoes Hayden's superior attitude and enables his poor treatment of others. When Russell, a transfer student, starts chipping away at Hayden's power base, Luke watches the rivalry grow more intense. Then drug-addled Hayden crashes a car into a tree, injuring one of their fencing teammates and freeing a spot on the team for Russell. Hayden volunteers to lead Russell's initiation to the team—a cliff dive into a small lake—and Luke reluctantly accompanies them on the ill-fated outing. Anhalt's accurate diction and sense of pace propel readers through Luke's indecision and numbness, which become tiresome. Interpersonal relationships are well realized, however, especially Luke's sputtering romance and friendship with Rachel. Though the adults in the narrative are mere tokens of responsibility, their weaknesses don't impact the overall plot. Teens will appreciate the action and the drama, without being overwhelmed by trendy names and labels as in other books set in boarding schools. Nineteen-year-old Anhalt displays some definite polish in her debut novel. Set in an uppity boarding school (the jocks here are fencers), the story centers around Luke and his best friend, the recklessly charismatic Hayden. A hotshot arrives at school and immediately threatens Hayden’s alpha-male status, stealing his girlfriend and wielding a saber like Errol Flynn. The clash comes to a head during a hazing ritual where Hayden pushes the new guy off a cliff to his death (no spoiler this, it’s on the flap copy.) Being the only witness, Luke can either claim it was an accident or face the possibility that his friend is in fact a murderer. Anhalt stretches Luke’s inner turmoil over the latter half of the novel, layering on plenty of palpable tension but not a lot of additional complexity to the moralistic tale. Luke’s alternating spinelessness and spitefulness can make him hard to sympathize with, but he and most of the other characters are credible; a touch of romance adds some levity. Teens drawn to boarding-school-scandal dramas will find plenty to gasp about here. Grades 10-12. --Ian Chipman

I am always impressed with new authors. The idea of all the hard work involved in writing a book, and then putting it out there for public criticism for the first time, must take an amazing amount of courage. It is especially impressive when I turn to the info on the back cover and see that the author is a 19-year-old sophomore in college. That's the case with a new release called FREEFALL.
Just how tough are you? When life hits you with a father who commits suicide and a mother who can't seem to get past it, how do you handle the other tough stuff that comes along? Ask Luke Prescott.
One might think that Luke has it all. He attends a fancy boarding school and has hopes of attending a nice college. Money isn't really an issue for him or for the friends who surround him at Briar Academy. He and his best friend and roommate, Hayden, are on the fencing team, enjoy the company of the occasional attractive female, and both get excellent grades. What could go wrong?
Although Luke feels he knows Hayden pretty well, Hayden has been acting strange lately. When a new kid named Russell shows up and demonstrates his excellent fencing skills, Hayden doesn't seem able to cope. When Russell also moves in on Hayden's girlfriend, things come to a head. Unfortunately, Hayden's temper may have gotten the best of him during an initiation ritual that involves the new fencing team member and a jump from a nearby cliff.
Luke finds himself faced with testifying either for or against Hayden at a trial accusing Hayden of killing Russell. He was there, but answering the question about what exactly happened is much harder than Luke ever imagined.
Debut author Ariela Anhalt has crafted a sure winner. Readers will be drawn into the culture of Briar Academy with its cliques and rituals. Luke's family story adds depth and emotion that underline the complicated situation he faces at school. Anyone who gets involved in his story will no doubt find themselves measuring their own strength and convictions against those of Luke and several other characters. I look forward to seeing more from Ms. Anhalt in the future.

Anhalt's novel hooks the reader immediately -- even one thoroughly senior to subjects and author. Her clever introductions of characters, crisp style, and interweave of plot keep tensions high enough that not only must one keep reading; it all lingers in mind long after. AK

Well written & complex - Can see it as assigned reading for school

This story is told from the viewpoint of Luke, a high school senior. A rivalry, in fencing and for the girl, arises between Luke's best friend, Hayden, and newcomer Russell. Emotions high, the three of them go up on a cliff in a (sort of) hazing ritual. Russell falls and dies - and Hayden is charged with murder. Early on, the conflicts and emotions of the key characters zoom to the stratosphere. This is an intense look at some very big questions. Is the truth always incontrovertible. Does being a loyal friend mean no matter what. And, near the end, as the trial starts: Is justice always just.
Given that adults wrestle constantly with these questions, it stands to reason that Luke is nearly torn apart by them in the wake of the accident-or-was-it-murder of a classmate. The subtitle of the book is most appropriate: "Sometimes the truth is a long way down".
"Freefall" refers not just to Russell's death from falling/being pushed off a cliff. I feel it refers to Luke, crashing down his life, as if Life is a building and he's falling through floorboards and ceilings from roof to basement, bruising his body and breaking his heart, and almost his spirit, along the way.
This is a young-adult book, and I'm an adult reviewing it. I mention this because I got a little irritated with Luke, sometimes. He can be selfish in his angst. But I think that a good part of my irritation stemmed from me being an adult trying to grasp the emotions and actions of a teenager. In real life, this can be incredibly difficult, so a book written from the standpoint of a teenager could feel the same! In other words, I think the author caught the feelings of a teenager very well.
I've asked my 16 year old daughter to read "Falling", to get her perspective, and will add to this review if she is impressed.
