The BEST Grammar Book!

I am retired English teacher, and I purchased this book for a college student I am tutoring. Warriner's is, without a doubt, the BEST grammar book published. It was the adopted curriculum for many years in public schools, and I loved teaching with it. The explanations are clear, and the practice exercises are useful. It's a shame that this text and English grammar are not taught any longer.

About the Author
James J. Gross, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at Stanford University and Director of the Stanford Psychophysiology Laboratory. He is a leading figure in the areas of emotion and emotion regulation and a recipient of early career awards from the American Psychological Association (APA), the Western Psychological Association, and the Society for Psychophysiological Research. Go ahead, choose your poison: 30.4 million GM cars using poorly-designed, “deadly” ignition switches (50% recalled, leaving 15.2 million to maim and kill); Toyota and Honda with detonators that spew out shrapnel making sashimi of your face and throat; or 2007-15 Chrysler/Jeeps that stall out, lose steering and brakes, and disable their airbags. These are all real dangers making 2014 a record year for safety-related recalls, not due so much to assembly line mistakes, but as a direct consequence of factory cost-cutting run wild, bad engineering, and poor design. Worst of all, 30% of the affected vehicles will never get fixed.� The biggest recall last year was GM’s ignition failures that have cost the company over a $4.6 billion U.S. and allegedly led to 23 deaths (two deaths in Canada) and hundreds of injuries. A Canadian class action has been filed in Ontario (www.gmclassactionsuit.ca). The fix rate for this safety defect is only 56% despite massive publicity given to the hazard.� This recall would not have happened if GM had replaced the ignitions ten years ago when first alerted to the defect. The payout would have been $37.7 million, according to confidential General Motors documents released by the U.S. Congress. The cheaper $14.2 million repair that GM authorized saved the company $23.5 million ― a savings that has ballooned into a loss of almost $5 billion.
GM’s dangerous ignition switches and the company’s coverup are the latest confirmation that automakers will deliberately manufacture a vehicle that will kill or maim simply because, in the long run, it costs less to stonewall complaints and pay off victims than to make a safer vehicle.
I first learned this lesson after reading the court transcripts of Grimshaw v. Ford (fire-prone Pintos) from 1981. Reporter Anthony Prince wrote the following assessment of Ford’s indifference in an article titled “Lessons of the Ford/Firestone scandal: Profit motive turns consumers into road kill,” People’s Tribune (Online Edition), Vol. 26, No. 11, November 2000:

Rejecting safety designs costing between only $1.80 and $15.30 per Pinto, Ford had calculated the damages it would likely pay in wrongful death and injury cases and pocketed the difference. In a cold and calculating “costs/benefits” analysis, Ford projected that the Pinto would probably cause 180 burn deaths, 180 serious burn injuries, [and] 2,100 burned vehicles each year. Also, Ford estimated civil suits of $200,000 per death, $67,000 per injury, [and] $700 per vehicle for a grand total of $49.5 million. The costs for installing safety features would cost approximately $137 million per year. As a result, the Pinto became a moving target, its unguarded fuel tank subject to rupture by exposed differential bolts shoved into it by rear-end collisions at speeds of as little as 21 miles per hour [34 km/h]. Spewing gasoline into the passenger compartment, the car and its passengers became engulfed in a raging inferno.

And here are more recent examples of corporate greed triumphing over public safety: 35 million vehicles worldwide equipped with “grenading” Takata-made air-bag inflaters used by 10 automakers since 2008; 16 million defective Ford cruise-control deactivation switches that catch fire while the vehicle is parked; millions of Jeeps with unprotected fuel tanks that burst into flames in a rear-ender (Jeep will install a free trailer hitch.); and Toyota, Honda, Chrysler, Ford, and GM minivan sliding doors that suddenly open while underway, or injure passengers when closing unexpectedly.� Putting profits first, carmakers don’t give a damn for auto safety, building quality products, or protecting the environment. Instead, they lobby for “zombie” consumer protection laws (neither dead nor alive), set up “secret” warranties, hide behind bankruptcy filings, and slap gag orders on settlements. My first guide to car buying...could've been better.

Good info, but not nearly as holistic as I was hoping. Ex: Ford Ranger=no information. Focuses on Japanese, Korean, and a healthy slathering of American vehicles. Were I to do it over, I'd just buy the consumer reports super car edition. It also tends to focus on Canadian car buying. The other gripe I have is when it comes to pickup trucks, it only does an okay job. Great on cars, but not what I was looking for. Ex: current used truck market fails to depreciate as quickly as one would hope. Financially, it is almost better to get a lightly used/new pickup truck than it is to buy one with some serious mileage due to the current market forces. Yay perceived economics. Otherwise, it does provide a lot of general info. I recommend getting it from the public library or a friend if you can.

I've always used this book when shopping for a car. It's unfortunate that the level of detail is not consistent per manufacturer. For example, there are more than 45 pages re Ford, and more than 20 re Kia, but less than one page re Mitsubishi. So an informative book, but not a complete guide.

Not just for Seniors

There are many seniors who are technologically challenged as they did not grow up with all the gadgets available to us today. Computers, phones, tablets, digital cameras, all have a learning curve. This book is an introduction to the wonderful world of digital photography, aimed at seniors, but applicable to anyone just starting out.

Rich's main emphasis is on using the camera in your phone or tablet. He barely touches on stand-alone digital cameras. The assumption seems to be, if you are just starting out, you are not going to buy an expensive camera, rather you will use the one already in your pocket or in your carrying bag. He reinforces this opinion in the title of his first chapter, “Getting Started with Digital Photography Using Your Mobile Device”.

The next two chapters give a basic overview of how to take photos under varying conditions using your mobile device. He gives specific step-by-step instruction for both the iPhone and Android devices throughout the book. With one exception, this reviewer feels he is clear in his instructions and on target. On p. 85 Rich states, “Taking a candid shot of one or more people is relatively easy, as long as you (the photographer) are positioned in the right place at the right time and you don't interfere in any way with the person or people you're photographing.” In the reviewers experience, it is very difficult to take a candid photo that captures the exact moment wanted. It takes patience and a bit of luck (right time and right place) to capture a great candid.

How to transfer photos from your phone or tablet to your computer, editing your photos on your mobile device or computer and how to organize your photos on these devices are covered in the next six chapters. Various ways to share your photos, via email, online, a digital diary, printing from a service or your own printer, and making a photo book round out the next six chapters.

The book is lavishly illustrated, each written step in a process is numbered and shown on the illustration what button you need to push or swipe in your device to accomplish the task. The detail is fabulous for a newbie. Others, who are more experienced, can scan the steps to reinforce their knowledge.

Their are hundreds of books explaining photography, none which this reviewer has seen which is as complete as Rich's book is for the newbie. It is a very easy read. It can be read cover to cover, or you can read the specific chapters which interest you. A welcome addition to books for the beginner.

Author Jason Rich, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that allows you to become familiar with the equipment and apps that you need; when and where you can snap digital photos; and, what you can do with the images after you take them.

Author Rich, begins by showing you some of the basic information that is needed to ultimately take awesome photos through the use of your mobile device. Then, the author covers how to use the Camera app to take pictures with the camera built in to your smartphone or tablet. He continues by discussing how to use the basic digital photography strategies that you can use with your own creativity to take better photos. Then, the author discusses how to transfer photos from your smartphone, tablet, or the memory card in you digital camera to your PC or Mac computer. He then describes how to use some of the common photo editing and enhancement tools found in most photo editing mobile applications. Next, the author explores how to use specialized computer software to edit or enhance your images prior to sharing or showcasing them. He continues by showing you the strategies for better organizing your images once they're stored on your PC or Mac. Then, the author discusses how to organize your digital photos while they're stored on your smartphone or tablet; and, keep them organized when they get transferred to a computer or to an online photo sharing service. He then shows you how to compose an e-mail from your smartphone or tablet that contains an attachment of one or several of the photos stored on your mobile service. Next, the author explores some of the ways you can share your photos online. He continues by showing you the specialized software and mobile apps that allow you to create and maintain a digital diary that makes it easier to tell your story by using your photos. Then, the author discusses your options for ordering prints to be made from the digital images stored on your mobile device or computer. He then shows you how to use a home photo printer to create prints from the digital images stored on your computer or mobile device. Finally, the author covers the strategies for creating s compelling photo album or scrapbook by using your photos; plus, how to create and publish a professionally bound photo book that showcases your favorite images.

This excellent book shows you how to choose your subject and digital shooting approach for each shot. Also, this great book helps you select the best shooting perspective and camera angle to make your shots more visually interesting.

Creative but unpolished

This is a quick and entertaining read with lots of typos and grammar errors. It reads a bit like a fairy tale where everything gets neatly wrapped up so the main characters can live happily ever after. The author has clever creative ideas but needs a copy editor to clean up the finished edition.

I read the first and thought it warranted reading the second installment. The romance is overly cute and tedious. Too many quirks, the hermaphrodite, the neurologically damaged rescue cat, etc. It is not unique to this book but I am getting tired of the super-hacker buddy who gets into all files easily. It's getting to be the deux ex machina of mystery and thriller novels.

Really enjoyed the first book, this one not so much.

I really enjoyed the first book, so I jumped right into the second book which really is a clear continuation.

The story itself was fine. I got into this series because it was advertised as a Mystery Thriller. There was way too much content focused on the developing love between Sam and Indy.

Way too much. It's like the author needed to fill in space after the story was written so he went back and detailed puppy love as a filler. If the trend continues in book three, I promise you I won't finish it.

I do like Mr. Archer's writing style, the books are easy to read,and so far the stories have been well thought out and believable.

That's important to me.

Must read for people designing interfaces for mobile devices.

tl;dr This is a must buy if you're an interface designer for mobile because it's a well researched, structured and thorough reference to interaction/interface design best practices.

In the same vein as Jenifer Tidwell's Designing Interfaces book Designing Mobile Interfaces is a full color collection of 76 interface design best practices used in mobile devices. What makes this book unique is that the authors have canvassed not only advanced phones but also GPS units, PDAs, handheld game consoles and various other small devices with a screen and then made sure they had research or evidence to support the each best practice. As such this book is extremely thorough, researched and structured.

Each best practice pattern is broken into a 'Problem', 'Solution', 'Variations', 'Details' and 'Anti-pattern'. I really appreciate the structure of each but I have to say the images while abstracted and clear are kind of hokey due to the black, yellow and red color scheme. More than anything though I've really enjoyed the Antipatterns because they do a good job of contrasting the best practice with well the not best practice.

For instance, the Notifications design pattern. In it they state that if there are multiple ones they should be displayed all together (not serially) and shouldn't interrupt the users workflow. Once I read the best practice I could clearly see why the notifications in Apples iOS 5 make so much sense and why the previous notifications were flawed. That was the section that really validated that these guy know what they're talking about.

So far I've read through the first two sections of the book (I. Pages & II. Components) and I have to say that it is worth it. On the other hand, it has been a bore which is why I took one star off. They start the book with the vary basics 'Pages' and 'Titled' which led me to skip some pages but overall the information in is book has been very rich.

Who is this book for?
If you are responsible for the interface or information architecture of a mobile device or app then this book is a must read. I've been designing interfaces for mobile devices for the past two and a half years and this book has helped to expand my vocabulary and articulate why I make the decisions I make.

How to use this book?
I hate to admit it but trying to read this from cover to cover is going a slog but it will serve as a good reference when brainstorming new interfaces.

Thick but juicy

This book centralises the science of designing interfaces, void of any specific platform or device but rather allows the reader to think spatially in terms of UX for the thumb. The Mobile developer will be able to follow the various topics or 'best practices' in a familiar theme of Problem-> Solution, with commentary and options following that. Some of the topics are quite basic, stale and non-exciting but if you can follow the book and skip over sections you don't feel is appropriate for you, then this book accumulatively is great.

I recommend this book, because it forces developers and designers to go through the basics they thought was right, re-think that and adjust, rather than cut corners and dive into the excitement of mobile development. I would take my time and read each chapter on my down time and learn something new, rather than dedicate a whole chunk of my time in one go to it. It's the type of book that is a reference than a page-to-page necessity. If you are working on an iOS, Android or Mobile Web App, this book provides themes that are device-independent in a thoughtful, comprehensive and mechanical approach.

Designing Mobile Interfaces is a comprehensive reference guide for mobile design patterns, information architecture, and interactive design.

This book is published by O'Reilly and was written by Steven Hoober and Eric Berkman, a mobile designer and an interaction designer with more than 10 years of experience.

BASICS FIRST
The authors start with a comprehensive tour of basic concepts of design and how they apply to mobile interfaces. They also introduce mobile interface design from a practical, end-user-oriented perspective, explaining in detail aspects of design that are often overlooked by novice developers such as: the environment, stimuli, human factors and interaction beyond the GUI.

DESIGN PATTERNS
The book is then dedicated to document in extensive detail using visual examples and pointing out differences across platforms and/or interaction constraints.

Each pattern consists of the following sections:
1) Problem - the situation being addressed through design (i.e. you want to display a list of data to the user)
2) Solution - the definition of the specific pattern (i.e. Vertical List, Scrolling, etc.)
3) Variations - a list of similar patterns

About the Author

Dr Andrew Klevan is University Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of St. Anne’s College where he convenes the Master’s Degree in Film Aesthetics. He is the author of two books, Disclosure of the Everyday: Undramatic Achievement in Narrative Film (2000) and Film Performance: From Achievement to Appreciation (2005), and a range of essays which explore and practise film criticism.
