Engaging story, good way to learn Spanish

This was the first book the Santillana series I finished. This book in particular has a story that is engaging enough to make the reader motivated to comprehend what's going on.

The thing I really like about the Santillana series is each book comes with an audio CD. The audio is spoken by native speakers at a normal speed, which I think is great. Often times it is pretty challenging and I have to rewind and play a few times before I understand it. There are comprehension exercises found at the end of the book, which are to be answered after listening to the CD, then more questions after reading, all of which I found useful. It's great for improving your listening, reading, and building your vocabulary.

I loaded the CD onto my mobile device, which makes it pretty convenient. I really which they had a Kindle version of the series though!

This series is perfect for the intermediate-advanced reader. As beginners, we started with the Pobre Ana books by Blaine Ray. After reading those 11 books, these are a great next step. They are a little "dark" depending upon the ages of your kids, but are fine for adults. After the Blaine Ray books, my kids read through La Casa del Arbol (Magic Treehouse) series…. it is hard to find great books for learning Spanish but these are pretty good. The Leer y Aprender books are okay, but have quite a lot of older Spanish or more Spain-Spanish, which for us was not good since we are in South America. The Leer En Espa�ol books are great and reasonably interesting and well written for adults. Highly recommend!

Listening to the CD's first, before you read the book is a fantastic way to practice your listening skills. Only problem is the books are published in Spain, so you need to get used to the Castell�n accent. But that is also a good thing.

About the Author

Dr. Harold W. Baillie is the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Scranton. He has been a visiting professor at a variety of international universities, including the University of Trnava, Slovakia, the State Medical University in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, and Capital University of Economics and Business, Beijing, China. Domestically, he has been a visiting professor at the Yale University School of Medicine, and Ashland University. He is a co-author of the book Health Care Ethics: Principles and Problems, and co-editor, and contributing author, of Is Human Nature Obsolete? Genetics, Bioengineering and the Human Condition, from The MIT Press. He has authored articles on subjects ranging from healthcare ethics to metaphysics and political philosophy, and currently works as a medical ethics consultant with several local health care facilities. He received his A.B. from Yale University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Boston College.

John F. McGeehan, MD, is the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU). Prior to joining CMSRU, Dr. McGeehan participated in the development of another new medical school, The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, PA.�where, among many roles,� he was course director for The Profession of Medicine in which he taught medical ethics.� He has also been a course director at Temple University School of Medicine, and was Director of Medical Education and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Mercy Hospital in Scranton.

Dr. McGeehan received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital. He created the Ethics Committee at Mercy Hospital in Scranton which he chaired for many years and currently is on the Ethics Committee at Cooper University Hospital where he does ethics consults.

If the patient did experience pain when I inserted the IV that can't be intelligently argued as "evil

" Nearly everything we do has some undesirable side effect or at least the risk of some evil." (P.62)
" Because most people realize that it is impossible to avoid all evil, ethicists have devised various general rules to help people to decide what evils can be tolerated." (p. 64)

The definition of the word evil is " profoundly immoral" with the provided synonyms: wickedness, depravity, sinful, vile,....

What is up with the word "evil" in this textbook? I am offended by the misuse of it and feel it has no place in the context of discussing the delivery of healthcare services. How about the use of the word "harm" instead?
A woman makes the choice to receive chemotherapy for breast cancer. There are possible side effects of this agent; to describe them as evil is ridiculous. I am starting an IV so a patient can receive antibiotics for an infection. I explain to the patient the benefits and risks. If the patient did experience pain when I inserted the IV that can't be intelligently argued as "evil." Worst case scenario, the patient develops an infection at the insertion site or the IV infiltrates; that is unintentional harm, but not profoundly immoral, wicked, or vile.
The authors state that there are those in health care that believe in magic. Come on, really. No health care professional believes in magic, miracles maybe but not magic.
The book is biased and is not written by someone who is a health care provider. The case studies are unrealistic and the questions are ridiculous.

Word Frequencies in Written and Spoken English is a landmark volume in the development of vocabulary frequency studies. Whereas previous books have in general given frequency information about the written language only, this book provides information on both speech and writing. It not only gives information about the language as a whole, but also about the differences between spoken and written English, and between different spoken and written varieties of the language.�The frequencies are derived from a wide ranging and up-to-date corpus of English: the British National Corpus, which was compiled from over 4,000 written texts and spoken transcriptions representing the present day language in the UK. The book is based on a new version of the corpus (available from 2001) providing more accurate grammatical information, which is essential (for example) for distinguishing words like leaves (noun) and leaves (verb) with different meanings.�The book begins with a general introduction, explaining why such information is important and highlighting interesting linguistic findings that emerge from the statistical analysis of the British National Corpus vocabulary. It also contains twenty four 'interest boxes' which highlight and comment on different aspects of frequency - for example, the most common colour words in English in order of frequency, and a comparison of male words (e.g. man) and female words (e.g. woman) in terms of their frequency.�
Geoffrey Leech is Research Professor in English Linguistics at Lancaster University. He is the author, co-author or co-editor of more than 20 books (most of them published by Longman) on Linguistics and the English Language.
Paul Rayson is a Research Fellow in the Department of Computing, Lancaster University and has extensive experience of statistical corpus analysis and corpus annotation. Andrew Wilson is a Lecturer in Computer Corpus Linguistics at Lancaster University. He has been involved in corpus research since 1990 and has written several books, including Corpus Linguistics (1996, co-authored with Tony McEnery).

This is a great book, it keeps your interests as I am on the 7th book of this series and find them to be very exciting. The series makes you care about the characters and you are cheering them on. Robert Crane is a good writer and knows how to hold your attention as he tells the story that entraps your attention. great read and enjoyable !!

Great book to take your kids to another level in their fath

We have read many children's versions of the Bible and some of them are over simplified and some a bit to difficult for kids. However, this book breaks down several concepts that kids of this age need in order to fight the spiritual battle and to take their faith to the next level. Although the book is written to grab the attention of children from a large age group, it is very well written. The book is based on scripture and applies concepts in such a way that kids are bale to understand them. I love this book. So much so, thatmy children (ages 3-12) and I read it together just about every night. We read sections and discuss how it applies to them and their situations. Quite often you can see the light bulbs going off over their heads, as they are finally able to understand the bible scriptures that we read together, as well. This book has helped my kids to see how important their thoughts really are. The great thing is that they are enjoying the journey.

I truly recommend this book for kids from the ages of about 7 to 13.

My daughter was having some anxiety and fear in situations where there wasn't really anything to be afraid of. By reading this book she was comforted by the scripture and text and has been able to overcome her fears.

You're Kids need this book!

It's a very good book. I'm reading this to my children who are 7 and 8. I'm learning things myself. It also reminds me thing I forgot, since I have to be an example for my kids. My husband read this book when I first received it and he likes it very much. Recommeded as a tool to help your kids stay on the right pad!
