Preface

As we enter the twenty-first century, the heritage of Western civilization is a major point of departure for understanding our own epoch. The unprecedented globalization of daily life has occurred in large measure through the spread of Western technological, economic, and political influences. From the sixteenth through the end of the twentieth century the West exerted vast influences throughout the globe for both good and ill, and the global citizens of this new century live in the wake of that impact. It is the goal of this book to introduce its readers to the Western heritage so that they may be better informed and more culturally sensitive citizens of the emerging global age.

Since The Western Heritage first appeared, we have sought to provide our readers with a work that does justice to the richness and variety of Western civilization. We hope that such an understanding of the West will foster lively debate on its character, values, institutions, and global influence. Indeed, we believe such a critical outlook on their own culture has characterized the peoples of the West since its earliest history. Through such debates we define ourselves and the values of our culture. Consequently, we welcome the debate and hope that The Western Heritage, seventh edition, can help to foster a genuinely informed discussion through its overview of Western civilization, its strengths, weaknesses, and the controversies surrounding it.

Human beings make, experience, and record their history. In this edition as in past editions, our goal has been to present Western civilization fairly, accurately, and in a way that does justice to that great variety of human enterprise. History has many facets, no one of which alone can account for the others. Any attempt to tell the story of the West from a single overarching perspective, no matter how timely, is bound to neglect or suppress some important part of that story. Like all authors, we have had to make selections for an introductory text, but we have attempted to provide the broadest possible coverage suitable to that task of introduction. To that end we hope that the vast array of documents included in this book will allow the widest possible spectrum of people over the course of the centuries to give personal voice to their experience and to allow our readers to enter into that experience.

We also believe that any book addressing the experience of the West must also look beyond its historical European borders. The students reading this book are drawn from a wide variety of cultures and experiences. They live in a world characterized by highly interconnected economies and instant communication between cultures. In this emerging multicultural society it seems both appropriate and necessary to recognize the ways in which Western civilization has throughout its history interacted with other cultures, influencing other societies and being influenced by them. Examples of this two-way interaction, such as that with Islam, appear throughout the text. To further highlight the theme of interaction, The Western Heritage includes a series of comparative essays, The West & the World. (For a fuller description, see below.) Goals of the Text

Our primary goal has been to present a strong, clear narrative account of the central developments in Western history. We have also sought to call attention to certain critical themes:

The capacity of Western civilization from the time of the Greeks to the present to generate transforming self-criticism. The development of political freedom, constitutional government, and concern for the rule of law and individual rights. The shifting relations among religion, society, and the state. The development of science and technology and their expanding impact on thought, social institutions, and everyday life. The major religious and intellectual currents that have shaped Western culture.

We believe that these themes have been fundamental in Western civilization, shaping the past and exerting a continuing influence on the present.

FLEXIBLE PRESENTATION The Western Heritage, seventh edition, is designed to accommodate a variety of approaches to a course in Western civilization, allowing teachers to stress what is most important to them. Some teachers will ask students to read all the chapters. Others will select among them to re-enforce assigned readings and lectures. We have reorganized and rewritten the last two chapters (30 and 31) to permit instructors to end their course by emphasizing either social or political factors in the twentieth-century experience.

INTEGRATED SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND POLITICAL HISTORY The Western Heritage provides one of the richest accounts of the social history of the West available today, with strong coverage of family life, the changing roles of women, and the place of the family in relation to broader economic, political, and social developments. This coverage reflects the explosive growth in social historical research in the past quarter century, which has enriched virtually all areas of historical study. In this edition we have again expanded both the breadth and depth of our coverage of social history through revisions of existing chapters, the addition of major new material, and the inclusion of new documents.

While strongly believing in the study of the social experience of the West, we also share the conviction that internal and external political events have shaped the Western experience in fundamental and powerful ways. The experiences of Europeans in the twentieth century under fascism, national socialism, and communism demonstrate that influence, as has, more recently, the collapse of communism in the former Soviet Union and eastern Europe. We have also been told repeatedly by teachers that no matter what their own historical specialization, they believe that a political narrative gives students an effective tool to begin to organize their understanding of the past. Consequently, we have made every effort to integrate the political with the social, cultural, and intellectual.

No other survey text presents so full an account of the religious and intellectual development of the West. People may be political and social beings, but they are also reasoning and spiritual beings. What they think and believe are among the most important things we can know about them. Their ideas about God, society, law, gender, human nature, and the physical world have changed over the centuries and continue to change. We cannot fully grasp our own approach to the world without understanding the intellectual currents of the past and their influence on our thoughts and conceptual categories.

CLARITY AND ACCESSIBILITY Good narrative history requires clear, vigorous prose. As in earlier editions, we have paid careful attention to the quality of our writing, subjecting every paragraph to critical scrutiny. Our goal was to make our presentation fully accessible to students without compromising vocabulary or conceptual level. We hope this effort will benefit both teachers and students.

Seventh Edition

INTRODUCING ART & THE WEST A beautiful and important new feature enhances students' understanding of the artistic heritage of the West. In every chapter we highlight a work of art or architecture and discuss how the work illuminates and reflects the period in which it was created. In Chapter 5, for example, a portrait of a young woman on the wall of a house in Pompeii and the accompanying essay provide a glimpse into the life of well-to-do young women in the Roman Empire (p. 161). In Chapter 7, two views of Salisbury Cathedral illustrate an essay on Gothic architecture (p. 248). In Chapter 16, two paintings tell contrasting stories about domestic life in eighteenth-century France (p. 526), and in Part 4, works by Turner, Manet, and Seurat illustrate both the power of the new industrialism and its effects on European social life. Part 5 includes discussions of paintings by Grosz, Magritte, and Picasso. In Chapter 30, Bread, painted by the Soviet realist Tatjiana Yablonskaya, and Jackson Pollock's One (Number 31, 1950), offer starkly contrasting views of twentieth-century culture (p. 1040). About the Author

DONALD KAGAN is Hillhouse Professor of History and Classics at Yale University, where he has taught since 1969. He received the A.B. degree in history from Brooklyn College, the M.A. in classics from Brown University, and the Ph.D. in history from Ohio State University. During 1958-1959 he studied at the American School of Classical Studies as a Fulbright Scholar. He has received three awards for undergraduate teaching at Cornell and Yale. He is the author of a history of Greek political thought, The Great Dialogue (1965); a four-volume history of the Peloponnesian war, The Origins of the Peloponnesian War (1969); The Archidamian War (1974); The Peace of Nicias and the Sicilian Expedition (1981); The Fall of the Athenian Empire (1987); and a biography of Pericles, Pericles of Athens and the Birth of Democracy (1991); and On the Origins of War (1995). He is co-author, with Frederick W. Kagan of While America Sleeps (2000). With Brian Tierney and L. Pearce Williams, he is the editor of Great Issues in Western Civilization, a collection of readings.

STEVEN OZMENT is McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard University. He has taught Western Civilization at Yale, Stanford, and Harvard. He is the author of ten books. The Age of Reform, 1250-1550 (1980) won the Schaff Prize and was nominated for the 1981 American Book Award. Magdalena and Balthasar: An Intimate Portrait of Life in Sixteenth Century Europe (1986), Three Behaim Boys: Growing Up in Early Modern Germany (1990), Protestants: The Birth of a Revolution (1992), and The Burgermeister's Daughter: Scandal in a Sixteenth Century German Town (1996) were selections of the History Book Club, as is his most recent book, Flesh and Spirit: Private Life in Early Modern Germany (1999).

FRANK M. TURNER is John Hay Whitney Professor of History at Yale University, where he served as University Provost from 1988 to 1992. He received his B.A. degree at the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D. from Yale. He has received the Yale College Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching. He has directed a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute. His scholarly research has received the support of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson Center. He is the author of Between Science and Religion: The Reaction to Scientific Naturalism in Late Victorian England (1974), The Greek Heritage in Victorian Britain (1981), which received the British Council Prize of the Conference on British Studies and the Yale Press Governors Award, and Contesting Cultural Authority: Essays in Victorian Intellectual Life (1993). He has also contributed numerous articles to journals and has served on the editorial advisory boards of The Journal of Modern History, Isis, and Victorian Studies. He edited The Idea of a University, by John Henry Newman (1996). Since 1996 he has served as a Trustee of Connecticut College.

This Western Civilization book is full of information and is very easy to read, unlike some other books of the same subject. It presents information that you need to know and that you would've never known without this book. The coolest part is that you can take the quizzes and tests online instead of actually having to go to school!

About the Author

MARK S. DASKIN, PhD, is Clyde W. Johnson Collegiate Professor and Chair of the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan. A Fellow of both the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), he has published extensively in his areas of research interest, which include supply chain network design, supply chain reliability, location modeling, healthcare operations research, and service operations management. Dr. Daskin is past-president of INFORMS and a past editor-in-chief of both Transportation Science and IIE Transactions. He is the author of Network and Discrete Location: Models, Algorithms, and Applications, also published by Wiley.

The textbook gathers a bunch of operational, financial and marketing concepts, and applied them in the service context. When a read the textbook title I was expecting specific models, a holistic view of the issue and better examples. For me, the textbook doesn't work.

Like Liver and Onion; Realistic, though not the Happiest Thing on Earth.

For me, this was a fantastic read. But there's two things to think about before picking this up:

1. It's written in second person (When I saw YOU), and that's a little jarring. This is honestly the first story I've read in second person that wasn't written by a first grader. I would've preferred first person, but, well, we can't always get what we want.

2. That dark, nameless presence thing is more a symbol than a part of the book. So if you're (Second person, I'm so clever) looking for a supernatural/paranormal book, it's more supernormal than paranatural.

If those two things are okay, then definitely, read this. Basically, this is a story about the narrator dealing with her father as he's sick and dying and can't do much for himself. Most of the story is told through flashbacks of the narrator living with her dad or dealing with her siblings (who show up for his dying time as well) and all those dramatic family dynamics like a sitcom's Thanksgiving episode.

Maybe that's not the best holiday since this is set in the UK. But it's not all bangers and trainers; even if you're unlucky enough NOT to be married to a hot Brit, it shouldn't be a problem. (Poor, poor, people)

Full disclosure, I work in end of life care, and people react to their loved ones dying in different ways. Some people that read this might think that the family is apathetic, cold, unrealistic, but in my experience, that's a common way to grieve when the death is slow and drawn out. Families grieve in different ways. This book doesn't the kind of heartwarming, friendly advice like a televangelist saying all is well, but focuses on a different, troubled family and how they deal with it. And the depiction of these people and how they deal with it is the most real I've seen yet.

There's more inspirational, life-changing books about the dying process out there, but for one with a less happy tone that realistically shows the way a broken family deals with the passing of the glue that held them together, read this one.

Weak character voice and ill-defined characters

This is a book about a woman whose father is dying. I came to this book, given its title (and fantastic reviews), looking for words to help me understand, or classify, my own feelings because my dad, too, is in his final days.

Perhaps my disappointment comes from the LACK of words that I was expecting. Reviewers praise the author's lyrical language, and the beauty of her descriptions... but I simply wasn't dazzled. I wanted more introspection, more profundity. I wanted to feel the narrator's pain, yet found her character weak and vague, and constantly complaining to herself. She was so selfish as a narrator, that she barely gave any depth to her siblings' characters. Instead of finishing the book at a meager 144 pages, I would have preferred a deeper understanding of why the others took such superficial roles in caring for their father, and of the feelings they had for him and for each other. Even the dying father, the other protagonist, is faint and undefined. Many wonderful words could have been spent in describing him, his feelings and perhaps his last reflections.

Finally, there are other themes in the book that merited further detail, such as the imaginary creature lurking in the shadows and its meaning and relevance to the main character. Also, I wanted to learn of the aftershocks after the mother abandoned them, and how her absence impacted the family.

Cracks in the Fa�ade

In this intense novella we see an already damaged family dealing with the impending death of their father. Our narrator is the beleaguered middle child and daddy's girl, who seems to be the rock holding everything together -- until the cracks in her fa�ade begin to show. Interactions with her siblings bring out the comfort of that shared experience, but also the strains of their lives together. As her father's life ebbs, she drifts into remembering the very worst times in her life and a memory of something that may or may not have happened -- and something that waits outside the house. In his introduction, Graham Joyce calls it 'fractured realism' and it fits. A strong exploration of the dark spectre we must all find a way to deal with sooner or later.

About the Author
L. Dodge Fernald is Senior Lecturer on Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling/ Clinical Psychology from Cornell University and has served as a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Madrid and as a Visiting Professor at Cornell University. He was the Assistant Dean of the Masters of Liberal Arts Program at the Harvard Extension School until summer 2001. His basic textbook, Introduction to Psychology, that went through several editions with Houghton Mifflin and Prentice Hall and he has written other books for Erlbaum (The Hans Legacy: A Story of Science) and Macmillan (Walking Tour of Walden Two, with a Foreword by B. F. Skinner). He has received the Petra T. Shattuck Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Harvard Extension School, and he is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association Division Two - Society for the Teaching of Psychology. His areas of interest include psychological measurement, clinical practice, and the educational implications of psychology.

great book

Bought this book for my undergrad capstone class and it was very informative of the different perspectives in psychology. Each chapter goes in depth on the particular perspective and comes with a summary and important key words at the end of the chapter. Also, there are a couple questions that you should be able to answer at the end of the chapter. Overall, really great textbook and sums up the perspectives perfectly.

A Big Beautiful Book That Shows and Explains Technique Behind the Asanas

This is a gorgeous, large volume written by Mr. Iyengar. Not only does it explain the history of yoga and its philosophy, it also discusses BKS Iyengar and his life. The bulk of the book focuses on the most popular asanas. The photography of the asanas (poses) are superb. Each pose is photographed from different angles so you can see what the pose is supposed to look like when done correctly. Iyengar yoga stresses proper alignment and breathing. There are tips and techniques for beginners and advanced yogis. I take yoga classes that have 40 people; the teacher does not have the time to go around correcting everybody. Reading this book has helped me enormously with my yoga. This volume is packed with information, so you can always discover something new when re-reading it. It is a fantastic reference for beginners to advanced students. I highly recommend this as an invaluable resource if you practice Iyengar Yoga.

This book is amazing - it shows you how to get into the pose, what the pose is beneficial for, gives you a 360 degree view of each pose and he then provides various modifications for each pose to take you through the months as you build your practice. The last part of the book give you a series of poses that are beneficial for various ailments or issues. This is an amazing book and I wish I had it sooner!

Practice Changing!

This book is changing my practice. First it is beautiful and coffee table quality. Secondly, the clear photos and descriptions, along with the organization of the book, have made it very a useful adjunct to my yoga classes. I am practicing more regularly and with clearer intention. Also pronouncing the Sanskrit names before each pose, which was hard before because although I had heard them in class, I hadn't seen them in writing associated with the pose before. Not that this is terribly important, but it makes me feel like a sincere student now. There are helpful sections organized around various ailments to help choose appropriate therapeutic poses.

Simple, Straight-forward and from a legit source

I've been ordering the powdered product for quite sometime now but have always thought that it would/should be fairly easy to grow at home and I was right. It's been a couple months since I've set up my little tank and I'll get about a tablespoon a day from it, which is perfect to supplement my diet with. Plus, I'm amazed at how good the spirulina tastes! You can literally the whole tablespoon plain no prob, tastes almost like an egg yolk, with a creamier texture. Plus, growing it your self is soooo cool! Friends are always asking me what it is and I love having them try the fresh stuff, they are always surprised how good it tastes. Also, Dr. Wolf-Baum (who apparently is also a NASA algae scientist) is available for questions if you need him. I hight recommend this book, especially for 10 bucks :)

Grow Your Own Spirulina is a Masterpiece

Dr. Baum is very well trained on the subject matter. This becomes obvious when you read the book. Being well trained or educated is one skill set. Being able to make this sometimes technical information easy to understand for the diverse population who are interested in this subject is another skill set. Dr. Baum has both of these skill sets in spades. He is a natural born teacher. I can't wait for his next book. Paul Nagle, Taylor, Texas.

Excellent introductory guide to "farming" your own superfood in your living space. I sincerely appreciate that Dr. Baum tells you precisely how to mix your own growth medium. It shows me that he is more interested in the widespread dissemination of this knowledge, than he is in simply making a buck.
