"Forget Positive Thinking...Watch TV Instead"

Chapter 20 of Peter's book suggests just that! Forget affirmations - do this inventive "TV watching" exercise to eliminate (free yourself of) the bad, to make room for the positive talk to be heard! I feel that I am somewhat of an aficianado of self-help books. I keep telling myself I am sworn off of buying them...but then I saw Dr. Vajda give a presentation, and afterward he told us he'd written a book. He also stated ""it will be one of the last self-help books you will ever read." I admit I like to "skip around" and just open the book to whatever chapter speaks to me, and each time I have found something unique - something I had not encountered in other self-help books. He is right, it will probably be the last self-help book I will ever read, because I will refer back to it again and again.

Really Getting To Know Yourself

After reading Peter's book I found so many reasons for the things I believe and the reasons I do many of the things I do. It was so insightful to see myself and others I know in the pages and gain a clarity around those personas.
A great read and must read if you are looking to gain a better understanding of who you are and how to become a better version of yourself.

Still Dreaming of You

Those who know me know that I am not a big book reader. I enjoy reading magazine, informational books...such as those. Never would I have found myself reading an ENTIRE book from start to finish in 4 hours. But, in March 1995 when I was in 5th grade, news rang out at my school that Selena had died. Everyone had asked,"Who?" but not me...for my grandmother had loved her for years. Who would want to harm Selena? From then on, I became tangled in who she was. And I found many similarities. I was Mexican-American also. I hardly spoke or understood Spanish. I was even wearing bangs and lipstick at 11.
For years, I wondered why Chris Perez kept silent but was so grateful that he finally opened up to share his memories with us. It's been 17 years that we lost her. And with the pain we thought we already felt, this book seems to help "stich up" the wounds.
Chris helps you to see who the REAL Selena was. The kind-hearted, funny girl from Texas. She was just like anyone of us.
I recommend this book to all who have heard her songs, saw the movie and anyone who has a dream but is afraid to follow it. For, Selena, this Mexican-American girl from Texas, dreamed big and made it.

Wonderful, personal account of off stage Selena

Selena fans have been waiting for years for a book like this. No one in her family has ever personally penned any sort of biography on her, and this may be the closest we'll ever get. The timeline of the book follows a similar timeline to Selena the movie (minus her childhood and the original Los Dinos years of course), it provides a personal account of Chris' perspective as a band member of Los Dinos, what it was like to be on tour with them, including the early days and the later success, how his relationship with Selena began, the details of their elopement, and the ups and downs they went through as a newly married couple trying to juggle fame, fortunate, family and 5 dogs. He also talks about the awful day she was murdered, his opinion of Yolanda, and his experience after Selena's death, though he doesn't go much into his present day personal life. It fills in many holes that the movie glossed over, not all, but many. Any true Selena fan will appreciate this book. It is so easy to see Selena's smile and hear her laugh the way Chris describes her, he brings her back to life in the pages of the book, making her come alive more as a human being through personal anecdotes about Selena, opposed to focusing on the dazzling performer she was and the superstar she was going to become. It's much less about Selena's success as an artist (though of course that is talked about), and more about how she and Chris felt, what they were going through as the band became more and more successful, and how their relationship grew and evolved. It's like an inside guide to what was happening on a personal level that follows a similar timeline as the movie. Loved it.

Chris did such a great job detailing the love he had for his wife

I was honestly waiting for this book to come out years ago - I literally finished this book in one day. Chris did such a great job detailing the love he had for his wife. It's really refreshing to know that Selena lived her life to the fullest up to her death and that she had an amazing husband supporting her along the way. I am glad they were able to share their success together and have all these great marital stories. Selena will always be my one and only female icon ! As for Chris, one can only hope to find a husband as supporting and loving in their lifetime.

A decent read

I had my eye on this book of stories for a little while now, having followed Ari on Thought Catalog and Twitter. I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend $3 when I can read a ton of her work for free. The stories were decent enough, and are typical Ari Eastman. All in all, I guess I'm happy to have supported her in this small way.

A Hilarious Romp Through The Halls of Academia

Cow Eye Community College is a rural institution offering up a well-rounded liberal arts and technical education program and sporting a curious atmosphere promising hope and advancement while actually delivering despair - or so observes an educational administrator who finds himself in the back country of the rural Cow Eye community facing down its biggest problem: ruin.

Charlie had no idea his job description was to include miracles and leadership on such a grand scale - but then, Charlie actually mirrors the atmosphere of Cow Eye perfectly: he's down on his luck himself.

Can the blind lead the blind? Evidently - but not without a lot of stumbling, as the whimsical and testy Cow Country reveals in the course of its romp through the politics and social mores of academia.

It's hard to neatly 'peg' the reader of Cow Country. Certainly, a sense of humor is a prerequisite. Another a 'plus' would be a familiarity with the inner workings (and ironies) of higher education (of which this reviewer has some light experience from decades past), which come to light in a series of encounters and vignettes that deftly comment on community college functions and institutional actions that alienate as much as they seek to unite.

As readers move through the dubiously hallowed halls of higher education, they will come to find that the initial prerequisite of some familiarity with a community college structure, though desirable, is not actually a prerequisite: those who have any kind of insights on institutional ironies and inconsistencies will relish Cow Country's hard-hitting observations about life in the slow lane of reluctant change.

In the end, shelve any concerns that Cow Country will be indecipherable and uninteresting to any but the academic or institutionally-immersed reader: it's a story with universal appeal, and it's a tour de farce that opens with a downtrodden administrator facing the threshold of historic change in a small community, walking over the line, and continuing down the road into the sunset, concluding with a single program connecting sex and enlightenment with the wider goals and struggles of a community college environment.

Cow-Punchin' Maverick of a Novel

Let me admit up front that I bought this book after reading Winslow's review in Harper's, wherein he deduces that the author is actually Thomas Pynchon. Being a Pynchon fan and having taught English for 30 years at public institutions (20 of these at a community college), this book seemed up my alley.
Reading was slow going at first. It took forever for the first-person narrator, Charlie, to get from the bus stop to the campus. But as he settled into his new job, the pace picked up. The novel doesn't have much of a plot. Charlie's misadventures in preparing for the returning accrediting committee reminded me of K's tribulations meandering around Kafka's Castle.
Characters are distinguished not by personality traits, diction, or styles of expression, but by the content of their speech. The local Establishment supports the old Cow Eye Junction meat-eating, hard-drinking lifestyle. They are represented metaphorically by the drought-stricken brown (male) wasteland surrounding the campus. The newcomers are vegetarian yuppie dopers, represented by the lush, water-soaked (female) campus. But both worlds are no places to set up permanent residence. One is "desiccated" and withered; the other is self-centered and phony.
Charlie tries to figure out how to reconcile the two. He makes attempts to ascribe allegorical meaning to events at the college--like the calf-castrating initiation for new faculty. It's a lost cause. As Blake puts it, "That which is explicit to the idiot is not worth my care."
Read solely as a satire of academia, the novel would be amusing. Pearson skewers just about every aspect of teaching and administrating at a community college, from the opening convocation in the cafeteria to the classroom visits to the faculty social hours. No department, no discipline is left untouched. But despite the fun, like all satire, it has a serious theme. What the book suggests about the future of academia, culture, society, and the environment is indeed sobering.
So, to return to the beginning: Did Pynchon write this? I think it's likely. However, even if he didn't, Cow Country might be the ultimate metafiction. Persons/Pearsons/personas are writing reviews and commenting on them in ways that sound suspiciously like the author, or someone pretending to be the author, or the author pretending to be Pynchon, etc., etc. Who knows? Maybe I'm actually Pynchon. Or Pearson. Or not. Postmodernist literature doesn't get better than this.

Ambition and Ability

During one of Cow Country's characteristically biting scenes of burlesque, a young man recites the rules of good fiction: plot must be straightforward and transparent; motivations must be logical and reasoned; unnecessary words must be trimmed (along with unwarranted punctuation, including the exclamation mark); prose must be realistic and understated; dialogue must be feasible to the point that characters' spoken pronouncements resemble the guttural utterances of precocious third-graders; and philosophy must be excised "like the scrotum from a three-month-old calf."

I am happy to report that this advice is gleefully ignored by the novelist who put it in his character's mouth. On the rare occasion that I tune into a boxing match, I don't want to see Floyd Mayweather eke out a boring, technical win: I want to see Ali standing over Liston in a position that could not have been better premeditated for a photo-shoot. I want to see ambition and ability in a reckless game of one-upmanship. The author of Cow Country, I think, agrees.

(And even if none of the foregoing were true, I could not dislike a novel within which is to be found the line "My wife had a vagina made of butter, you know.")

Much more than a coloring book – an excellent 30 day guide for devotional studies with 15 Pages of Coloring Designs

As I have purchased and reviewed the Premium version of other of this publishers books, I'm certain that the paper in the spiral-bound version of the book is an improvement over what the paperback.

This is an excellent devotional guide which can be accomplished in 30 days (as the writer suggests) or at your own speed if you prefer to save out the time you spend in devotional study.

The format of the book alternates between one day of suggested tasks and prayers to the next day of coloring. That amounts to fifteen days each of both formats. Each day is prefaced with cited verse of Scripture and the task/coloring relates back to that verse.

Each day has a page of verse and then the author shares her personal thoughts and experiences which relate to the verse. Then, you either follow the tasks or color the design depending on which day it is.

I found the course of study to be of immense personal use for me. It seemed as if the entire book had been geared towards the issues I have been facing. The stories that the author tells are heartfelt and the suggested tasks are ones that, while I found a bit emotionally challenging, were ultimate rewarding for me.

The coloring was just a small part of this book and the designs are geared to and highlight the Bible verse. Each of the drawings can be accomplished in a day.

For coloring purposes, the paper in this book is white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforated. Alcohol and water-based markers bleed through. Gel pens and India ink leave shadows of color on the back of the back. Colored pencils work well (both oil and wax based) but hard lead pencils can leave dents. I use a blotter page under the page I am working on (both coloring and using a pen for writing) to keep ink and dents from marring the pages below.

Simple and Impactful

This is truly an awesome book. I really did not expect such rich content. I ordered this as a gift for my wife who enjoys her quiet time every morning. But after reading through it for myself, it made me realize how simple spending time with God can be and how much we can complicate things on our own.
I especially love the slots for prayers, this way I'll be able to look back on all the answered prayers God has granted. Really Cool and Great Gift.
