Another grand, dense volume in the series

The paperback edition of this volume was divided into two separate books -- likely due to the number of pages and the limited strength of the softcover binding. Like the other volumes in the series it is authoritative and requires concentration to read. I like the histories by Rahn (battle of the Atlantic), Wegner (Case Blue), Stumpf (North Africa), but especially the discussion of strategy interspersed throughout. The information on the war in Asia and the Pacific should have been omitted given very limited German involvement there and the existence of more authoritative histories. Worth the money. You cannot get better quality nor more first class information per dollar spent.

Brilliant introduction to Chinese History

This is a truly helpful and stimulating introduction to Chinese History, an ideal companion volume to more structured, non-illustrated histories: clear, highly explanatory maps; excellent choice of images and visual documents that bring to life China's bygone ages. Although the book focusses on broad historical trends across China's pre-dynastic and imperial ages up to modern times, it also offers boxes that deal with iconic figures of their times and with cultural issues that defined each historic period. I use this book as one of my sources to teach a Chinese Cultural History course and it has never let me down. Its only weakness lies in the dearth of parallel text translations: unfortunately a very common feature of books dealing with Chinese culture, history, literature etc. written in the English language. Offering access to the original in Chinese can be a bonus, as some of the poems or documents quoted in English are not always to be found easily in Chinese over the net or elsewhere.
Still, a wonderful Chinese History book, highly recommended.

This is a good solid introductory history of China with much more well written text that I had expected. It covers the major facts very well. I would recommend for an introductory college course or anyone interested but unfamiliar with Chinese history. It contains many excellent and informative full color maps that I particularly appreciated. The many full color illustrations are clear and relevant to the text. It will remain in my Chinese history collection as an accessible reference. Garrison Moore

Concise and incisive: A highly readable summary

With more than a billion people and 5,000 years of history, it's not surprising that most books on the History of China cover a brief period in excruciating depth. Patricia Ebrey's book is a deliciously self-aware overview, that delivers just what it promises: It covers all the issues and the illustrations are carefully chosen to amplify the text (not just a bunch of photos bound in the middle of the book). The book is beautifully printed--in China, of course!
Ebrey gets across the important point that we look to China and want a simple, linear summary, when China is complex and decidedely non-linear. (The Cultural Revolution as much happened to Mao as it was caused by him, for example). Moreover, she explains how our Western world view needs to see certain things (we always want the good guys to win in the end--perhaps they won't). This book would be great for a student at any level from High School library on to college. It could be used as a text and I'm also recommending it to US business people working with China. It's a wonderful introduction to the culture. The only quibble is that the Anglo pronunciation of pinyin isn't explained with a reference (for example, Qing Dynasty is pronounced "Ching" but you can't find that here). The pricing is very attractive too.

About the Author

Dr. Roger Pierangelo is a Professor in the Department of Special Education and Literacy at Long Island University. He has been an administrator of special education programs, served for 18 years as a permanent member of Committees on Special Education, has over 30 years of experience in the public school system as a general education classroom teacher and school psychologist, and serves as a consultant to numerous private and public schools, as well as PTA and Special Education PTA groups. Dr. Pierangelo has also been an evaluator for the New York State Office of Vocational and Rehabilitative Services and a director of a private clinic. He is a New York State–licensed clinical psychologist, a certified school psychologist, and a board-certified diplomate fellow in student and adolescent psychology and forensic psychology. Dr. Pierangelo is the executive director of the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) and an executive director of the American Academy of Special Education Professionals (AASEP). He is also vice president of the National Association of Parents with Children in Special Education (NAPCSE). Dr. Pierangelo earned his BS from St. John’s University, MS from Queens College, professional diploma from Queens College, PhD from Yeshiva University, and diplomate fellow in student and adolescent psychology and forensic psychology from the International College of Professional Psychology. Dr. Pierangelo is a member of the American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association, Nassau County Psychological Association, New York State Union of Teachers, and Phi Delta Kappa. Dr. Pierangelo is the author of multiple books in the field of special education, including two coauthored with Dr. Giuliani from Pearson Education titled Transition Services in Special Education: A Practical Approach and Learning Disabilities: A Practical Approach to Foundations, Assessment, Diagnosis, and Teaching.

Dr. George Giuliani is a full-time Associate Professor at Hofstra University’s School of Education and Special Education programs. He is also an adjunct professor at Hofstra University’s School of Law where he teaches special education law. Dr. Giuliani earned his BA from the College of the Holy Cross, MS from St. John’s University, JD from City University of New York School of Law, and MA and PsyD from Rutgers University. He earned board certification as a diplomate fellow in advanced child and adolescent psychology, board certification as a diplomate fellow in forensic sciences from the International College of Professional Psychology, and board certification in special education from the American Academy of Special Education Professionals. Dr. Giuliani is a member of the American Psychological Association, Education Law Association, New York State Psychological Association, American Bar Association, Suffolk County Psychological Association, Psi Chi, American Association of University Professors, and the Council for Exceptional Children. Dr. Giuliani is the executive director of The National Association of Special Education Teachers, executive director of the American Academy of Special Education Professionals, and president of the National Association of Parents with Children in Special Education. He has been a consultant for school districts and early childhood agencies, and has provided numerous workshops for parents, teachers, and other professionals on a variety of special education and psychological topics. In full disclosure, I have not approached the content of the book. This is based strictly on the fact that you are going to pay a highway robbery price for a small amount of content. The physical quality of the product itself is just awful. I was not aware that such poor, flimsy paper stock existed. It is clear they cut every possible corner in quality to squeeze every penny into their own personal profit. It is a shame that textbook companies are just looking to make a buck, and that the good people who go into teaching have to waste their money on content that could easily be made available for a fraction of the cost if the textbook company cared about supporting educators instead of just making a buck. Don't buy this product by choice, but if you are a teacher and need to buy it for a course, thank you for all your hard work in an honorable profession and my condolences on the money you will spend that could have gone to much better use elsewhere.

About the Author

Peter Larson is founder and president of the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in Hill City, South Dakota, whose staff was responsible for excavating the T. rex known as "Stan." He lives in Hill City, South Dakota.

Kenneth Carpenter is the dinosaur paleontologist for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. He is author of Eggs, Nests, and Baby Dinosaurs (IUP, 2000) and editor of The Carnivorous Dinosaurs (IUP, 2005) and The Armored Dinosaurs (IUP, 2001). He lives in Aurora, Colorado.

Lots Of Stuff On T Rex

I really liked this book, it is a series of papers presented at a conference hosted by the Black Hills Institute (if memory serves). It contains most of the current state of discussions on T Rex of a few years ago. The articles range in technical detail - some are easy for a layman to read, some others are practically the same as what would be published in a technical journal, and very dense and opaque. But rewarding if you work through them. One article forced my to create a glossary and map of the skull bones so I could track the discussion. Not for those who enjoy pretty pictures, but those who want to know where the current thought is, several different sides of it. (Although the T. Rex as obligate scavenger POV was not as well represented as others)

T. Rex, revisited. Outlook, good.

At last, a T. Rex volume which is capable of bringing the world up to speed with recent discoveries. The Accompanying CD is fantastic. A great read and a comprehensive view of T.Rex/Bird similarities. Well done by all.

Great book !

This is the best book, to date, devoted entirely to the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex. While it is not perfect, it is as good as they get. I highly recommend this book. It will inspire those who will take us to the next level in understanding these magnificent creatures. I wish this book existed when I was doing my own research; it would have saved me quite a bit of time.
