Prepositions are the major problem for ESL learners

I have been to many ESL classes.

However, I still have difficulties writing correct English sentences. All these classes overlooked my two major grammar problems.

Whenever I write, I have to think a lot before selecting an appropriate preposition or article.

Fortunately, I came across the books of this excellent author Tom Cole:

The Preposition Book

The Article Book

I like his way of teaching. First, he introduces a rule, then you have exercises with the answers. After several rules, you have a comprehensive test covering them all. Each book has a lot of material, but you do not have to cram the rules. You memorize them by doing all these exercises. So, the books are great for self-study.

Excellent supplement for exam study

I tutor students for the Cambridge exams (FCE, CAE, CPE, etc.), and the TOEFL test, among others. The hardest part of these exam for all of them, no matter how long they've been studying the language, is the English in Use section. Prepositions are such an important part of the language (any language), but they are said so quickly that it's very hard for an English learner to catch them unless they are concentrating very hard, but it's a frustrating process. Up until now, I thought that simply by reading a lot they would subconsciously absorb the words, but, through my own struggles in learning prepositions in another language, I've finally realized, that prepositions have to be actually studied, then practised, and only then will the student be able to hear them consciously and use them correctly.

I found Tom Cole's book after a long search, and it is exactly what I've been looking for to help my students. It explains the prepositions and phrasal verbs in groups, gives clear explanations and examples, offers many excercises, and then gives a quiz at the end of every chapter. It also has the answers at the end of the chapter which I find much easier than having to look in the back.

The description of the book says that it's geared toward intermediate students, but even the most advanced students have the same problems with prepositions if they've never studied them, and so I would say that this book is very useful for pretty much any level.

It's a book that's been very well thought-out and it's just what students of these tests need, to feel more confident about this extremely challenging part of many English language exams.

Disappointed! The CD-ROM does not accompany this book.

Reading the back cover of this book, I got the impression that the CD-ROM was included--

It clearly says, "The Preposition Book is accompanied by a CD-ROM,Preposition Pinball and Other Games, which is sold separately or with this book." Turns out the CD-ROM is not sold with this book, but is a separate purchase on Amazon.com for another $24++. Since the CD-ROM is where the essential practice and instant feedback sessions are, the book sans the CD-ROM is but a shell. Just a quick succession of tersely stated rules and a couple of cursory exercises that follow. It is also puported to be an instruction manual for the CD-ROM, which you will have to purchase separately, of course.

The book itself is strictly OK. I take away stars for disingenuous marketing, and for nickel and diming the consumer. I expected better sale ethics from a public univeristy, like the publisher of this book....

Hank's in the Doghouse Again!

Hank the Cowdog is often accused of barking up the wrong tree,but just as CHristmas is arriving, he finds himself in real trouble. And not for the first time—no sirree! In fact, it’s the 66th time in this series. John R. Erickson’s adventures of Hank, “the head of ranch security” of the M-Cross rank in the Texas Panhandle, arrives just in time for the holidays with “The Christmas Turkey Disaster.”

Ranch owner Loper and wife Sally May have ben working to get the entire ranch in order for the Christmas feast. Alas, when Sally Mae discovers that the turkey she bought has met a terrible end, she blames Hank! Later that day, things seem to be looking up for our favorite canine protagonist—that is, until the replacement Christmas turkey “flies the coop,” too, landing Hank in even deeper trouble! Can an act of true heroism right the terrible wrong and actually salvage Hank’s reputation (and restore law and order for the holiday festivities), or is he doomed to spend the rest of his life “in the doghouse”? Erickson is completely in charge of the narrative, of course, in his usual clever way, and, needless to say, the “usual suspects” (Hank’s pals on the ranch) play their part in this saga, as well!

It appears that Hank may be eating crow instead of turkey!

Still, for all the 66 stories, Erickson (himself a real Texas cowboy) seems to enjoy giving us all these “adventures”—and we hope there’ll be more to come! Yee haw!

Bad for Hank - TERRIFIC for us!

John R. Erickson gets funnier and funnier. We listened to this CD for the first time driving an eight hour slog over a mountain pass. We almost drove off the road a couple of times, we were laughing so hard. We kind of regretted not bringing our other Hank the Cowdog CDs, they make a long, boring trip seem almost negligible.

Waaaaay too expensive, not comprensive

This is not a reflection on the company that supplied this book but rather the publisher that sets the price and allows this text book to be in circulation.

The one thing I liked about this book was that there was a summary published at the end of every chapter, with out this I probably would have been lost because there is so much "fluff" in the meat of every chapter. If any of the authors read this, please update to make more applicable to the current economic down turn, pull statistics not just from business majors, and shows more problems worked out.

Professors, please do not force your students to buy such an expensive book that they probably won't read anyway.
