Thomas E. Sniegoski has entranced audiences with his exploration of the Batman universe, thrilled fans with his Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics, and uncovered the paranormal with his Hellboy spin-off series, B.R.P.D. Now, he introduces readers to a mesmerizing dark world filled with monsters, where humanity’s only hope lies in the bravery of one woman…

When the Throng came, the human race never stood a chance. The monsters were simply too strong, too numerous. It only took a few months for them to take over and leave the few poor souls who survived cowering in terror for years to come.

But even the monsters fear something: the dark goddess known as the Raven’s Child. Legend says that she alone is destined to destroy the Throng and free those under their cruel power.

And whoever wields her name and image could become the bane of the Throng and an inspiration to humankind—even if she were only a young woman, like Carissa Devin, who has vowed to reclaim the world for the human race, no matter what the cost…

Better by far than I expected!!!
By John O'Connor
I wasn't sure what to expect from this one. I had read Sniegoski before and I am a huge fan of Brown's "Hopeless, Maine" series. I read the blurb and thought that perhaps it would be another alien attack story. It is.............and it isn't. I won't do spoilers but this almost raises the alien attack story to the stature of mythology. It's a much more complex story that I am used to, and the characters, while somewhat basic are drawn well enough to make them interesting and to make you care for them. The artwork is wonderful!!! I highly recommend this book as a great addition to your graphic novel collection. An excellent story and great art.

Fighting for Survival and Spreading Hope- The Raven's Child will save them or destroy them!
By Mama Reniazen
Mama's Thoughts on The Raven's Child:

I can honestly say I've never read anything quite like this. A graphic novel written with a science fiction master's voice, this dystopian tale with elements of the supernatural and interweaving myths is an action-packed, emotional journey through the eyes of Carissa, who is more than human, less than god. She is afraid, but very strong for someone who is obviously quite young, and utterly alone.

"Fear is the most virulent of diseases."

Fear is what the throng races invoke as you turn the pages, the desolation of the entire planet and its inhabitants paints a bleak picture, and the gritty illustrations accompanying the striking text lend a hand in creating this frightful nightmare. Although I wouldn't classify The Raven's Child as horror, it certainly is spooky. I kept wondering what new atrocity awaited me as I continued the journey, but ultimately I kept rooting for the human race.

When it comes down to us vs. them, we tend to unite in our fight to survive. I appreciated the realistic manner in which Sniegsoski portrays the remaining humans, how their emotions and horrible living conditions were portrayed by Brown, and how the artist and author managed to work together so well, I would never have thought I was holding the product of more than one voice. It's not only cohesive but also deftly woven into a tale of an alien apocalypse with more to the story than meets the eye. For its humanity, and for its striking use of mythology, The Raven's Child deserves 4.5 stars.

Better than its cover.
By R. M. Kray
Don't let the cover of this book fool you. The large amounts of green and the huge blocky text made me pass over this book for quite awhile, but when I finally picked it up off the shelf I was hooked from the very first page.

The Raven's Child takes place in a post apocalyptic earth, where masses of aliens (known as the Throng) have invaded the world and feed on humans. There is no justice and humanity has been almost entirely wiped out. One girl, named Carissa, manages to team up with a priest from the Throng who disapproves of his kind's bloodthirsty activity. Together they try to bring an old legend to life: the Raven's Child, a goddess who would punish the Throng if they ever forgot their limits. In this guise, Carissa seeks to bring justice to her lost loved ones, peace to her world, and inspiration to humanity.

The plot is really well paced, combining action with well placed flashbacks that tell the back story. Characters are developed well, and those who are not are given reasons for being standoffish.

And the art. Oh my goodness. The art is BEAUTIFUL. With only greyscale pencil art, the mood of the world really jumps through while sacrificing nothing on beauty.

This piece winds together the best moods of superhero stories along with sci-fi and mythology, and yet nothing feels out of place. A great book that I couldn't put down. Definitely take a chance on this one.
